Windows 10: How do I export Windows Live Mail email without a supporting email program association?

I just bought a new Windows 11 equipped computer and am migrating my email from a Windows 8.1 context. I have been using Windows Live Mail for years and had hoped to use the "File->Export email" feature in WLM to create a .pst file that I could import into Outlook which I will be using on my new computer. Unfortunately, when attempting the export, a message pops up saying "There is no email program associated to perform the requested action". WLM is set as my default email program but I suppose that the message is really telling me that WLM is not capable of performing the requested export

Think you are going to have to do a two step process. One install Windows Live mail on your new installation and the export the email. Windows Live is stilling "working" but it is not supported and it recommended that you find an alternate, as you have, before it truly stops working.

Of course you will have to find mail folder on old HDD. Lots of articles on location on web.

Then the exporting from Live and importing to outlook. This is an old article but should work. Make plenty of backups as you progress should you have to back up a step or two.

.........You need to scroll down to the Protocols section for MAILTO.............






.............You might also want to check Set Program Access and Computer Defaults to make sure WLM is the default e-mail.

It does not matter how many times I dotted Widows Live Mail > OK
The dot will return back to "Use my current email program ".
It has been so since Windows 7.
