    How do I get access to my users folder on my old hard drive?


    So recently, my old computer broke. I've purchased a new computer but wanted to keep my old files from my old computer, so I removed the hard drive and connected it to my new computer. When I try to go into my users folder, it says, "You don't currently have permission to access this folder. Click continue to permanently get access to this folder." Then I click continue, and nothing happens. My old computer was windows 10, and this new computer is windows 11 if that changes anything. I just want to access my old downloads and other things that were stored on my computer.

    How to recover data from an old laptop hard drive

    I have a 2008 apple hard drive from an old macbook. I am trying to recover the files with my new laptop (windows 10), however the hard drive seems to be password protected. I can open the hard drive but I cannot access the folders within the ''Users''
    folder. Any suggestions?

    Hi Ulises. I'm I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, here to help you.

    Install this handy right click shortcut which installs a Take Ownership shortcut to your right click menu to use in cases like this on files and folders which won't cooperate: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/3841-add-ta...

    The only warning is to not use it on C:\Windows folder files as this will compromise security.

    Then any file or folder that won't cooperate, just right click it to Take Ownership. You may need to do this for all folders in the tree, but it will always work.

    If you have an especially stubborn hard drive then there is one way that Windows cannot any longer block access to files and that's when you browse in from bootable media Command Line using a method here:

    Can't open user folder on old drive

    I installed an SSD and Windows 10 on my Lenovo laptop and connected my old hard drive externally. Now I don't have permission to access my user folder on the old drive. What to do? Also, the old drive has Windows 7 on it so the laptop asks which OS to use
    every time it starts up, even with the old drive disconnected.
