Windows 10: How do I get OneDrive to remove duplicate files that are eating up my hard drive space and...

As I read this from other postings, seems you have failed to resolve this OneDrive backup v. synching. this is criminal and you should be punished for your criminality. I stay away from OneDrive connecting to my computer other than me dragging files to store. OK, that's fine. Then the other day, a message popped and said OneDrive was synching the files and I constantly have to click to stop this. Then it asked if OneDrive could "back-up" my files. I thought it would be safe to do so, as I recently experienced an actual external hard drive failure that meant I lost permanently files from years

Yes OneDrive will duplicate your files in the OneDrive Folder on your hard drive . .

I find this very wasteful and really defeats the purpose of Cloud Storage. Te only way to avoid this is to set OneDrive to 'Files on Demand' however that option will mean that your files will only be stored on OneDrive and not on your PC

All Cloud Storage Applications (OneDrive, DropBox . . . etc.) perform this duplication on your hard drive and that process can very quickly eat up the space on your hard drive

 

Recent shortcuts for apps show files on OneDrive instead of local hard drive

I was able to follow the steps and uncheck the "Use Office apps to sync" box but it didn't change Office's behavior. I opened and closed an Excel spreadsheet on my local hard drive. After that, when I right-clicked on the Excel icon pinned to the taskbar, a link to the OneDrive cloud file was in the list of recent files instead of a link to the file on my hard drive.

Do you have any other suggestions?

onedrive and hard drive file problems

After setting up my device I wanted to change my OneDrive settings, remove my files from it, and uninstall the program. Under my OneDrive account I selected the files that had automatically been uploaded and clicked "Free up space". This removed all the files from my computer hard drive (that is unless OneDrive had already removed them) and I could only access them through OneDrive. I did not realize that "Freeing up space" would delete the files (from OneDrive and the hard drive) and I went back and restored them under my OneDrive account. I tried to move these files back to my hard drive but it pops up a Error 0x800ccc0f excepting the one time that it began to try to move my pictures back with the only downside being that it gave me a 16 hour time estimate. Is there any way of efficiently stopping OneDrive from uploading my data in which I can return it to the hard drive of my computer? Thanks.
