Windows 10: How do I get remote files to be stored temporarily in Sync Center / Offline Files?

Maybe I misunderstand the entire purpose of the sync center, but let me explain what I'm trying to accomplish and what's not working.


I have a share set up to a NAS server. It's mapped to Z. Everything can be accessed fine. I have 30GB free on my client-side computer, but I'd like to play a game stored on my Z drive which is ~55 GB. Even without Offline Files enabled, I can still play the game off the Z drive, but it's super slow to load. The solution I want is to enable Offline Files and increase the temporary file limit to 30GB so that after I load a file from Z: once, it'll store it and use it again if it's still cached.


I've tried doing "make available offline" to the entire folder, and it successfully makes the files available offline, but it doesn't necessarily cache the files in the way I want it to as described above.


I've also tried clearing out all offline files and set my temporary file limit to 30GB then running the game, but nothing downloads or fills up that space.


I've looked up information on Offline Files / Sync Center but it's pretty sparse. Can someone please help me with this?

• If you're using the Windows Sync Center application to access/manage your offline files.
• If you're referring to the use of the OneDrive application.
• If your device is managed by a domain or an organization.
• The exact error messages that you're getting when accessing the files.

In the meantime, we'd recommend performing the following steps to verify the status of the offline file access on your device:

• Search and launch Control Panel using Cortana.
• In the Search Control Panel box, type offline.
• Under Sync Center, click Manage offline files.
• In the Offline Files pop-up window, check if its enabled.

• Did you enable Offline files from the control panel?

There might be some third party applications conflicting to cause this issue.

Lets try the below methods and check if the issue persists.

Method 1: I suggest you to perform a clean boot
and check if the issue persists.

Disclaimer: A clean boot is performed to start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This helps eliminate software conflicts that occur when you install a program or an update or when you run a program
in Windows. You may also troubleshoot or determine what conflict is causing the problem by performing a clean boot.

After performing the clean boot follow the below steps and check if the issue persists.

Method 2: I suggest you verify if you have enabled offline files
and check if it helps.

• Press Windows key + R to open the run command.
• Type "control" and press Enter. This will open the Control panel.
• If View by shows Category, kindly change it to
  small icons.
• Find and double-click on Sync Center.
• Click on Manage Offline Files.
• Click on Enable Offline files.

Once you have enabled offline files you will notice that View offline files option is enabled too.
