Windows 10: How do I highlight more than one file at a time?

I used to click on the first file, hold down the shift key, then highlight the last file in a series which would then highlight all the files in between. doesn't seem to work like that anymore and I'm just now finding out. I'm looking at a list view and like to know how to highlight a number of files (for instance, I want to delete a bunch of contiguous files). Thank you.

Cannot highlight more than one picture at a time

I cannot seem to highlight more than one picture at a time. I am trying to put them all in a folder and I am having to do each one individually. I have read suggestions of highlighting the first one and then, using the shift key, highlight the last picture
and then 'ctrl A' That is not working. Ctrl A does nothing any way I try it. Using the shift key does nothing. Can anybody help?

 

Highlight more than one pic. or file

Before, as in week before last I was able, to have a small box at the top left corner of pictures, or files so could check more than one to move or copy, now I have to hold down the ctrl. button & it is a pain. I do use the ctrl lots of times,
but it makes it easier if I had that small left top corner box back. Thanks Debra

 

How can I use more colors than the regular Highlight bar?

I need more different colors for a chart than basic ones on the Highlight Bar.
