Windows 10: How do I install a system backup from an external hard drive onto a new laptop?

Hi, I’m trying to restore to a system backup onto a new laptop from an external hard drive. In Control Panel, I can’t find an instal option or installer wizard. How do I install the system backup onto the new laptop? Thanks

Laptop hard drive upgrade

To replace a hard drive on a laptop is a little more troublesome than a desktop. 1st as most people here suggest you will need some sort of a backup disk just in case. Also be sure when buying the new Hard Disk is compatible with your model. And i would strongly suggest you install a new system and start from scratch because there are far too many problems that can occur when transferring system files.

 

Laptop hard drive upgrade

If you ghost the OS from disk to disk with the same system it should work fine. Thing is you have to GHOST the disk, including the MBR or it won't be bootable. Any other normal laptop drive should work as long as the connections the same.



If you cannot make a backup install CD, you'll likely need to locate a windows install CD, unless you can ghost the drive. Thats pretty much your only options atm.

 

Creating a backup on an external hard drive

Hello,

I wanted to create a backup on an external hard drive (Toshiba Canvio). When I connect the drive to the USB port (tried all of the available ones in my laptop), I can see the files stored in the drive, save files to the drive and basically perform all the operations on the drive too. The problem starts when I want to create a backup of the system on that drive: In the Settings->Create a backup->Add disk I can not list that external drive. How to create the backup on that drive?

Laptop: Lenovo y50-70
Windows: 10 v. 21H1
