  1. How do I maintain Modified time while moving a file?

When I move a file by dragging and dropping in File Explorer, the destination file has a Modified time attribute that is 1-3 seconds later than the original file. When I copy a file with robocopy copy:dato in Command Prompt, the destination file also has a Modified time that is 1-3 seconds later than the original file. The Created time of the destination file remains the same as the original. How can I maintain the same Modified time while copying/moving a file?I am moving it between two external drives.

    :)

File in file explorer moves to bottom of list when modified

When working on a PDF, when the file is saved, it will jump to the bottom of the list of files in explorer. This is disruptive when working on files in a large folder. The folder is sorted by name, so there is seemingly no reason for them to move when the modified date changes.

  3. Searching for files by date *moved*? (not accessed or modified)

I've recently been moving a lot of pdf files from an "unsorted" folder to others where they are sorted by content. There is one I saw about a week ago I am trying to find again, but none of the search options seem to work for locating it because moving
a file from one folder to another doesn't automatically change its "last accessed" or "last modified" date. I always read the files before moving them to the sorted folders, and this does not change the file so I understand that it doesn't reset the "modified"
date, but puzzlingly (and frustratingly for my current need) it doesn't even seem to update the "accessed" date. Any suggestions, or am I out of luck here?

File in file explorer moves to bottom of list when modified

Thank you for reaching out! As an Independent Advisor and fellow Microsoft user, I'm happy to assist you.

The issue you're experiencing with PDF files jumping to the bottom of the list in File Explorer when saved, even though the folder is sorted by name, is a known quirk in Windows. This happens because Windows temporarily re-sorts the files based on the "Date modified" attribute when a file is saved.

Here are some simple steps to prevent this from happening:

    1. Sort by Name:
    - Open the folder in File Explorer.

    - Click on the "Name" column header to sort files alphabetically.

    2. Disable Auto-Sorting:

    - Open File Explorer.

    - Click on "View" in the top menu.

    - Select "Sort by" and ensure "Name" is selected.

    - Click on "Sort by" again and uncheck "Automatically sort in each folder".

    3. Use Details View:

    - Switch to the "Details" view by clicking on "View" and selecting "Details". This view is less likely to jump around when files are modified.

These steps should help keep your files in order and reduce the jumping issue when saving PDFs.
