How do I prevent a folder from uploading to OneDrive from my device?

I see this question posted many times elsewhere and answered with a link for instructions. But they all answered incorrectly! Other respondents report how to prevent a folder from being downloaded from the cloud to a device. I want to keep a folder on my device from taking up space in the cloud.

  2. upload album from app foto to onedrive

I have not any problem by:

    • Uploading a folder to OneDrive by using Edge
    • Uploading a folder to OneDrive by using Explorer
    • Downloading a file or a folder by using OneDrive
I have only a problem by uploading an album from the app Foto into OneDrive.

Disable auto-upload of photos to OneDrive

    Hi Mark,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community forum.

Auto-upload of photos to OneDrive occurs because there is no Group Policy
setting to disable the Camera roll upload photos and videos option.

I suggest you to try the resolution suggested in How to prevent
pictures from being auto-uploaded to OneDrive
    and check if it works.

Note: The article holds good for Windows 10.

Thumbnails for files won’t be displayed if the File Explorer is configured to show icons instead of thumbnails.

You may turn on Thumbnails and check if it works:

    • Open File Explorer and click on the
      File
      menu.
    • Choose Change folder and search options to open
      Folder Options.
    • Click on the ‘View’ tab, and under
      Advanced Settings
, uncheck Always show icons, never thumbnails.
    • Apply the changes.
    • Restart File Explorer and check if the issue persists.

If the issue persists, you may clear the thumbnail cache.

    Clear thumbnail cache:

    • Press Win + R keys together on the keyboard to open the Run dialog and type the following into the Run box:
      cleanmgr
    • Select the drive, and check the box for Thumbnails.
    • Click OK and wait for the cache to be cleared.

I suggest you to post a feedback in the Feedback Hub
to bring back Filmstrip viewer, so that our developer team can have a look into it and include it in the upcoming updates.

    Regards,

  4. How do I prevent a folder from uploading to OneDrive from my device?

How best to get 150 GB uploaded to OneDrive.

I was in a similar situation. This method worked for me but the caveat is you need sufficient hard drive space.

    1. Setup the files/folders in a folder (not onedrive) lets call it temp for uploading. Break them into groups of files that make sense and you can work with easily. Setup a second folder, lets call that completed uploads
    2. Setup the onedrive client to sync the local onedrive folder to the cloud
    3. Copy a small group of the files from the temp folder into the onedrive folder
    4. Monitor onedrive it should upload over time in the background
    5. Once uploaded move the completed files from the temp folder into the completed folder
    6. Repeat these steps
    7. Once everything has gradually moved into onedrive delete the temp and completed folders that are local on your hard drive, leaving the migrated files in the onedrive folder (and synced).

Depending on your network and internet connection speeds this can take a while but is a method you can just leave doing its thing.
