Hello. The word Copy means "An imitation or reproduction of an original; a duplicate". An imitation or reproduction of an original; a duplicate. From a records point of view, you're killing me....This is cracra that the Date Modified date or folder date as we lay people call it, changes when copying to an external drive. Please don't say you are modifying the date when copying to a new drive...not acceptable. One should be able to copy without changes of any sort. Like copying an individual file, the file date does not change nor should it but for some reason, the folder does...please work you

    :)

  2. How to decrypt and copy over a Bit Locker encrypted folder stored on an external drive, in Windows 10

I had used BitLocker to encrypt my Windows 10 PC, and periodically backed up my files to a folder on an external drive (that also included backups from different, non-encrypted computers in other folders).

Last week I had to factory reset my PC because it was freezing frequently. When I tried to copy over my files from the external drive, the folder they are stored in along with all the files are encrypted and couldn't be transferred.

When I try to open the files directly from the external drive they have a locked padlock icon and the error message says:

    • "It looks like you don't have permission to view this file. Check the permissions and try again".

The error messages I receive when I copy over individual files from the external drive to my (reset) PC are:

    • "You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy this file", and
    • "You require permission from Everyone to make changes to this file"

when I try to copy over entire folders, the error message I get is:

    • "Do you want to copy this folder without encryption? A problem is preventing this folder from being encrypted"

I have the bit locker recovery key for my PC prior to factory reset. However I can't find a way to transfer my folder back from the external drive into my (now reset) PC.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks!

  3. Cannot copy files from external drive

    Hi,

Thank you for replying back to us.

    1. Did you try to create a new user account and try to copy the files from your external drive to your computer?
    2. What is the location that you are trying to past the file? For example, are you pasting the files from your external drive to your Desktop, Documents, or somewhere else?
    3. Are you able to copy the same files from the external drive to the some other PC?
    4. Are the files write protected on your external drive?

Meanwhile, try the below troubleshooting steps.

Step 1: Go to the destination folder on your computer, where you are trying to copy the files from your external drive. Let’s create a
    New Folder on your desktop.

Step 2: Double click on New Folder from your desktop and
Right Click on some blank space and click on Properties
    and go to General tab.

Step 3: Under Attributes, completely uncheck the
Read-only option. (The box should be blank, check it again if it has a checkmark or a small square inside it).

Step 3: Click on Apply and
    OK
    .

Step 4: Now, open one of the files on your external drive and do the same, i.e.,
Right Click on a file (NOT THE FOLDER) >
    Properties
    > General and under Attributes, uncheck
    Read-only option.

Step 5: Click on Apply and
    OK
    .

Now, see if you are able to copy this file from your external drive to your computer.

    Hope it helps.

  4. How do I prevent the date of my folder from changing when I am copying to an external drive.

Date modified on all folders in my Documents and Google Drive changed suddenly to today's date

Using Windows 10 Pro, ver. 20H2, System Type 64-bit

Date modified changed suddenly to Today's Date and Time Stamp, Date Created intact, happened on

    • All non-hidden folders in my Documents, and Google Drive Sync folders on my computer
    • including all sub-folders of above also, file dates stayed intact
    • time stamp varied from 11:01 to 11:05 AM (date 11/30/2021)
    Facts:

    • I have auto-backup of my Documents - always ON to backup to Google Drive on the cloud. However, I have "other folders" on the Google Drive in the cloud that are synced to my Google Drive on my computer - these set of folders are different from my documents. The Date and time stamp on all these "other folders" also changed - interestingly at 11:01 AM, where as the folders of in my Documents changed to 11:04 AM time!
    • The computer C:\ drive was mapped to another new computer (Windows11). I was using robocopy on Windows 11 new computer to copy files from the mapped drive of the source computer windows 10 Pro (where the dates changed).
    • Robocopy was not active when dates changed. Robocopy last action was aborted (^C) about 20 minutes before the time stamp change. Robocopy was aborted to avoid endless wait/retry as certain system files would not copy.
    • I was deleting Documents folder, on destination computer, (to be re-copied later by skipping files in robocopy) This may have been happening around the time when timestamp changed, but not sure.
    • Did it happen due to Microsoft Windows or Google?
Please help, how to easily get back to where I was to begin with correct folder dates.
