  1. How do I refine display settings after Win 10 installation?

    Hi,

I have just downloaded and installed Windows 10. All is good except the default resolution seems too large. I have tried all the options available in Control Panel/Display/Screen Resolution but none work or are in proportion except the basic default 1024 x 768 setting though this is way to 'big' for me.

My monitor, an HP w1907v, appears to want 1440 x 900 at 60 Hz but all resolutions options available in Win 10 are at 64 Hz - not sure if this is the problem? The installed graphics driver is the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, a driver which the self-checking tool on the Nvidia website states is the correct driver for my old onboard graphics (Nvidia GeForce 6100 nForce 430).

I think I need to do something a little out of the ordinary. I cannot find a better driver but the resolution options are pants. Can I change the Hz from 64 to 60 and if so how, and will this offer the right resolution options for my monitor?

Is my only hope to install a graphics card?

    Thanks.

    :)

How do I refine display settings after Win 10 installation?

Have you gone into Device manager >monitors and rt click then click on update driver software? And don't worry about the Hz, that is the refresh rate. You could also look in Settings> Systems> Display> advanced display settings and see if 1440 x 900 is in the drop down box.

  5. Thanks for your response. After many hours searching, downloading, installing, uninstalling and breaking things, I fumbled across a solution.

    For the sake of others:

When I installed Windows 10 MS chose a generic driver for my 'old' onboard graphics and supposed 'non-PnP' monitor. The graphics were a mess and looked very odd. None of the usual tampering with settings worked. Anyway, I eventually spotted the original Nvidia drivers for my onboard graphics in my list of programs so knew a driver was there, even if it was for Windows 7. And so, I found the folder in Windows Explorer before going to Device Manager, and updating the generic graphics driver by pointing at this folder. Hey presto, the Nvidia driver loaded and my graphics normalized. Better still, perhaps after a reboot, my PC installed the correct driver for my monitor.

And now the world is upright, apart from the Middle East anyway. *Smile
