  1. How do I reset my system tray without the traynotify key, which appears to be nonexistent?

Normally, the system tray "icon stream" works fine, with no need for administrator intervention, but occasionally the stream can get corrupted. Normally, though, fixing this is as simple as deleting the icon stream and past icon stream keys located in the registry at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify, and then restarting explorer.exe (though the second step can be delayed as long as you don't click "show hidden icons", which would lead to a BSOD). However, I tried to do that just now but couldn't find the TrayNotify key. I searched the entire registry for anything related to "traynotify", but the only things I found were values under various hexadecimal class ids. What happened to traynotify? From what I can tell, this registry hack has been a thing since XP, so although everything will change eventually, given enough independent changes/updates are made, I feel this one should of been protected by some unwritten law or something.

    :)

  2. Notification area (system tray) icons missing, Reset did not work

Operating system: Windows 10 Home x64, Version 1607

Problem: Notification area (system tray) icons are missing.

If I restart explorer using Task Manager the missing icons are displayed. When I reboot my computer the icons again disappear.

I tried to reset the TrayNotify. This did not work i.e.

    \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify

    I deleted "IconStreams".

    The "PasticonsStream" was not displayed???

Should there have been a "PasticonsStream" field?

Can you fix the problem of the missing Notification area (system tray) icons?

I suggest you to try the below steps to add the icons to Taskbar and check if it helps.

    • Click on System> Notifications & actions.
    • Click on Select which icons appear on taskbar (to select the icons that appear on Taskbar)
and also click on Turn system icons on or off

How do I reset my system tray without the traynotify key, which appears to be nonexistent?

Windows 10: Missing TrayNotify folder in Registry

I have no notification arrow, icons and the under the Notification and Actions area the show which icons appear in taskbar nothing appears whether it's turned on or off. Under tutn system icons on or off everything is greyed out.

When I look in the registry (and I'm looking in the right place) the folder
    TrayNotify is
    missing.

      • HKEY_CURRENT_USER
      • Software
      • Classes
      • Local Settings
      • Software
      • Microsoft
      • Windows
      • CurrentVersion
      • TrayNotify MISSING see screen shot below. I marked where it should be.
    • Obviously these two values “iconstreams” and “PastIconStream“ are not present.

I tried resetting, system restore, restoring a system image to no avail. The icons that were there are operating I just can't see anything. There is no notification arrow in the taskbar either. Only the notification icon is there where you can select all
    settings or the quick settings.

I need someone who knows Windows to assist me with this.
