    How do I run `chkdsk /f` on the X: disk boot disk on Windows 10?


    I recently attempted to perform a system restore on my PC as I was having issues uninstalling a program. Somehow, midway through the restore, my PC crashed and it now consistently fails to boot normally, and always displays a CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED stop code.Using the chkdsk on the Command Prompt helped me realize that the issue is on the X: drive, which is the boot drive for Windows . I want to run chkdsk /f on the drive to fix it, but I consistently get an error saying that the drive is write-protected. At this point, I've already switched over to a new PC. I can still recover my data u

    We appreciate the response. I'm referring to Check Disk (chkdsk) utility tool. If you haven't tried yet, we suggest that you run a chkdsk by:

    • Press Windows Key + X button to bring up the power user menu.
    • In the power user menu, select the Command Prompt (Admin) option.Click Yes when you are presented with a UAC window requesting permission to launch the Command Prompt as Administrator.
    • In the new Command Prompt window, type chkdsk E: /f /r /x. Here you should replace E with your drive letter.
    This option will run chkdsk to check and repair disk errors in Windows 10. The “/f” parameter tells CHKDSK to fix any errors it finds; “/r” tells it to locate the bad sectors on the drive and recover readable information; “/x” forces the drive to dismount
    before the process starts.

    why cannot run chkdsk disk is write protected

    when i try to run chkdsk it says disk is write protected. Windows 10 repair disk could not fix. tried command diskpart; no success. tried C:/f/r/x would not work. please help.

    Disk Read Error

    /p flags good, I'm still thinking it's something in your boot sector and not hardware related.

    Try this:

    Insert your XP disk and boot from the disk
    Select recovery console
    follow the promts until you are in DOS
    C:\windows
    at the above prompts type FIXMBR

    Why?
    This will fix the Mater Boot Record for Windows it will ask you if you are sure and follow the prompts

    once complete type CHKDSK /r
    that is CHKDSK space /r
    this will check the disk and repair any bad sectors

    once complete type exit
