How do I save a file with a new name but keep the original?

I often want to open a file and use it as the basis for a new file. I used to click "save as" and give it a new name. The original would still be available. I just got Windows 11. It is deleting the original when I do a "save as." How do I save the file with a new name and still keep the original?

    :)

SAVE AS (original file is lost)

    Hi,

Among many other problems with Windows10, trying to "SAVE AS" (OFFICE 2016, NOTEPAD, any) results in an EMPTY original document.

    Example. "test.txt" (15 kb)

If I ‘save as’ a different name: "save as test.txt" (new name) I get 2 files:

    File 1: The original (“test.txt”)

    and

File 2: the new file (renamed) "save as test.txt" has 15 kb (new one)

File 1 (original) ("test.txt") is now empty. (0 kb)

I imagine there is a "workaround” of renaming the file after creating a new temporary file (having to close it etc.) but I do not have time for that.

    PLEASE ADVISE!

    Thank you

P.S. If this is already "exhausted" somewhere, please forgive me and post the link.

  3. All files are saving as PDF

    Hello Microsoft Community!

I am having an issue that just started today, very strange and annoying. All of my files are saving in PDF format, no matter the original program or the "Save As" selection. It is still showing up in the file explorer as a PDF. Below are a few steps that I have taken to attempt to resolve the issue. If anyone has any suggestion or insight that may be helpful, I am all ears. Thank you!

    • Attempted conversion from the original program and also Adobe - no luck with this.
    • Attempted to save the file in a different location, both cloud and local. No resolve.
    • Ran anti-virus to check for anything harmful. Clean scan.
    • Ran SFC to check for corrupt files. Scan located and repaired files.
    • Went into the default program settings. No changes were need there.
    • My pc and all programs are up to date.

Again, any help or suggestion is helpful.

      Thank you kindly!

  4. How do I save a file with a new name but keep the original?

deleting history of "save as" under "file name"

When I find an image I want to save , I click right on the image and then click " save as". A new window opens where under "file name" I write the name of the image I want to save and then click save. When I type in the name under which the image
is to be saved there appears a list of names of previously saved images. I don't want that list to appear. How do I delete that history of saved image names?
