Windows 10: How do I stop an in-progress update on my PC? I have a report due in 45 minutes.

I need to submit my paper in 45 minutes. I rushed home from work, sat at my laptop, turned it on, and bam update.

screen says "working on updates. Don't turn off your pc. this will take a while."

well that doesn't work for me. I don't have a while. I should be able to just use my own computer and make like 7 clicks and submit this paper, but it's not letting me. it's been stuck on 7% for the last 20 minutes.

is there any way to stop or pause this update so I can submit this paper? very frustrated.

How to stop Windows 10 update in progress

Hi,

This could be due to corrupted Windows Update components. We suggest that you run the Windows Update troubleshooter to address this. See this
support article and click on Download troubleshooter for Windows 10.

If the issue persists even after running the troubleshooter, we suggest that you delete the SoftwareDistribution folder or its contents. The SoftwareDistribution folder is used to store Windows Update cache. Follow the steps below on how you can delete the
said folder:

• Navigate to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution.
• Delete the folder itself or the contents.
• Restart your PC. Doing so will restore a new SoftwareDistribution folder that basically refreshes Windows Updates.

Can't install updates - uninstalling Changes, also restarting takes 45 minutes, Windows 10

My pc is set for automatic updates. Every time it tries to perform an automatic update the updates can't be saved and they are uninstalled. The process takes up to 45 minutes even if I just try to do a simple restart. I've tried different fixes as suggested
from other posts with no luck so far. It's been doing this since I bought the computer 2 years ago.

There are some steps, to
stop a windows 10 update while in progress.

1. In Windows 10 Start menu search bar, you need to type Services and when the same desktop application appear in the search results click to open it.

2. In Services window, you will find out the list of all the services running in the background. You need to scroll down until you find Windows Update service.

3. Here you need to the right click on the Windows Update and from the context menu select Stop. Alternatively, you can click on Stop link available under Windows Update option on the top left side of the window.

Once the Windows Update service is stopped by you manually, this will also prevent Windows 10 Update in progress until you restart the download process again or reboot the system.
