Windows 10: How do I stop vmmem from using too much memory when wsl is not installed?

So my computer has been experiencing massive slowdowns recently, and I decided to try to diagnose the issue. For whatever reason, my programs using a normal amount of memory they used to were showing as using the majority of it now. I dug deeper and found that vmmem is using an ungodly amount of memory. I could not kill the process, and I went to research the issue online and found people suggesting to simply try "wsl --shutdown" in command prompt. Well, I tried it, and all I got was a bunch of command arguments explained to me. I tried the other commands, and I saw that install actually start

Vmmem is not ending consuming a lot of power and memory.

to turn off Vmmem simply go into Powershell or whatever terminal you like to use under admin rights and enter the
cmd wsl --shutdown, when your done with playing in wsl1/2.

Cannot upgrade installed distros in WSL to version 2

After installing the Win10 2004 build 19041 update (running winver shows "version 2004 (OS build 19041.388)", I've tried to upgrade a couple of installed distros I had in WSL version 1 to WSL version 2 following the instructions at https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win.../install-win10. All the steps in the instructions compete successfully, up to the point where I try to change the WSL version of one of the installed distros to 2 at which point I see the messages below:

I have enabled the Virtual Machine Platform feature (it shows as on with a tick against it in Control Panel Windows features), Intel-vt virtualization is enabled in the BIOS, and running msinfo32 shows, at the bottom of the system summary listing:

I also tried installing another distro with the WSL default version set to 2, but attempting to launch it shows the error:

Any suggestions on how to get around this problem? From what I've read, WSL2 gives worthwhile speed increases over WSL1, and so is worth using if I can get it to work.

Thanks for response. In short - what you are observing - Linux machine that you run with WSL2 runs in context of VMMem process - so if you run VSCode from within Ubuntu - there is no "code.exe" process but it's in context of "vmmem.exe" process - you started
"code" process inside WSL2 - Linux Virtual Machine, which is hosted by vmmem process - the more you run with WSL2, the more VMMem process will consume resources. Are you able to see this correlation? What happens with usage after you close VSCode?
