How do I stop Windows using an Ethernet without Internet route over a WiFi with Internet...

I have an Ethernet connection to my router and a Wi-Fi connection to a personal hotspot. When the router's Internet connection is down I want Windows to route traffic via the Wi-Fi connection to the personal hotspot instead, but it appears to be continuing to try to connect to the Internet via the Ethernet connection. The Network & Connections panels shows that it knows that the Ethernet doesn't have Internet and that the Wi-Fi does, but it still tries to connect to the Internet via the Ethernet. If I disconnect the cable so that only the Wi-Fi remains then everything works fine, but I want

    :)

Internet disconnecting, first with WiFi, now with Ethernet, constant

So I have been in the same house, with the same ATT router for the past 3 years. A couple months ago I started having WiFi connectivity issues on my PC only. My wife computer who is using a USB Wifi adapter continued to work fine, as did all of our other devices in the house. The WiFi would intermittently just stop working and I would get the "No internet, secured" error.

I tried various steps to fix it via google but ultimately going into network settings and selecting "reset network" and restarting the PC was the only fix. This was always temporary, and after a short period of use I would lose connection and have to repeat this process.

I figured the WiFi adapter that I was using on my PC was going out so I just ran an Ethernet cable directly from the router to the PC and reset the network. At first, I had a good connection but soon experienced the same issue. I now have to reset the network and restart my PC multiple times a day because my internet will just stop working constantly. It's only on my PC, everything else in the house, WiFi or direct Ethernet connection is working fine.

Some other notes about when this occurs now that I am using Ethernet connection. When the connection drops, things quit loading obviously but my PC still shows a working internet connection when I go to the network settings. When I run the windows network repair it fails to find any issues. Resetting the network seems to be the only fix, but it is very temporary.

    Version 21H1 (OS Build 19043.1110)

    Any tips on fixing this?

    Thanks

  3. Using WiFi for internet while using Ethernet (wired) for peer-to-peer between two laptops

I am a former network manager, but that was over a decade ago. I used to be able to do this just fine. But since I upgraded to Windows 10, I can't get this to work. I just need to be able to use the WiFi adapters to connect to the internet, while also using the Ethernet adapters to do peer-to-peer networking between the two laptops. I have tried using the WiFi for peer-to-peer but it is too slow. And I would prefer to not do my peer-to-peer networking over the same connection as my internet, just for security purposes.

    Here are the details:

I have two laptops. The brands don't matter (or really shouldn't). I use my phone for my internet as a WiFi hotspot. For the WiFi adapter in each laptop, I have all protocols other than IP v4 turned off, as shown below.

    WiFi Settings

This is because I don't want to expose my computers to any more vulnerabilities than absolutely necessary.
For the Ethernet adapters in both laptops, I also have "Client for Microsoft Networks" and "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" turned on, as shown below:

    Ethernet Settings

On the WiFi adapters, I let DHCP assign the IP address, DNS server, and Default Gateway. While on the Ethernet adapters I assign a static IP (yes, in a different subnet from the WiFi, in the same subnet as each other and with different last digits of the IP address), and no default gateway. I also set the "Metric" on the Ethernet adapters to be higher than the "Metric" on the WiFi adapters, so the internet traffic would route through the WiFi adapters rather than try to route through the Ethernet adapters ... and thus go nowhere.

As I said above, that used to work fine.

Until I installed Windows 10. Now it doesn't work. The only way to get the peer-to-peer networking to work is to set the "Metric" lower on the Ethernet adapters than on the WiFi adapters. But then that slows down the internet to intolerable speeds and often can't resolve IP addressses through DNS at all. (Now, if I unplug the Ethernet cable, the internet will naturally work just fine. But that is a total pain.) As soon as I switch the Metric settings back around, then the internet (WiFi) works and the peer-to-peer (Ethernet) doesn't.

I have googled around till I am blue in the face. A) This is a really difficult problem to google. B) It appears that all the things I am already doing are exactly what everyone is suggesting. OR, they are just saying that it is completely impossible to do this any more in Windows 10. Seriously? Did Microsoft just decide that no one deserves to use WiFi and Ethernet at the same time? Really?

Is there some additonal protocol that I need to turn on? I have already tried turning them all back on, but that didn't do anything.

Oh, in case it matters, here are the build numbers of my Windows:
    Laptop 1: Windows 10 Home, Version 1709, Build 16299.192
    Laptop 2: Windows 10 Pro, Version 1709, Build 16299.192

Now, before someone suggests that I upgrade to Windows 10 Pro on my main laptop, I don't want you to suggest it unless you really KNOW it will fix the problem. I don't need a bunch of people just suggesting random things to change.

However, I might be willing to consider a hardware workaround, such as an Ethernet switch with a WiFi repeater that will connect to my phone's WiFi hotspot and let both of my laptops then connect to it via Ethernet cable. I have found these on the internet, but then my file sharing is back on the same connection as my internet, and I would like to avoid that.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide. It seems to me that this would be something that lots of people would need to be able to do.
