Windows 10: How do I transfer my retail digitally linked Windows 10 license from my old computer to my...

Hi there,

So i have a retail home license which is not OEM and it is linked to my microsoft account.

I built a new computer and want to use my old license. I thought linking it would be easier as it suggested it was......

I removed my old computer from the devices in my microsoft account

It is still showing as activated and my new computer as unactivated. My new computer is signed in, my old computer isn't.

If this wasn't account linked I would have just stripped the license off via command line and popped it on my new computer... I linked it because it ws supposed to be easy....

I have tried the support desk on my new computer but they don't seem to ring back?

How can I use my license?

Windows 10 Digital License Transfer

1) You cannot transfer digital licence without using MS account if original key is not retail. If original key is retail, you can just use it to activate new pc.

Your windows 7 key should still be valid if retail.

Your legal obligation is to wipe windows from old pc if you reinstall on new pc and transfer licence (either by reusing retail key or doing a digital licence transfer if linked to MS account).

The fact old pc might activate automatically if new owner installs windows is not your problem provided you did not indicate it will activate automatically.

 

Transfer digital license from old PC to New one.

You would have to first ensure the Digital License is linked to your Microsoft Account. See instructions how to do that. You can then use the Troubleshooter on the new computer after installing Windows 10 to restore the license.

Please note, if your license was upgraded from a OEM preinstalled Windows 7 or Windows 7 license, it is not transferable.

Digital license transfer to another account

New computer need new Windows 10 or a retail purchased license to transfer activation.

You can not transfer Digital License from one computer to another.

The Digital License comes from the activation of the computer.

If the old computer had the Windows installed when purchased then it has an OEM license and it is tied to that motherboard and can not be transferred.
