Windows 10: How do I turn on the option to encrypt .zip files on Windows 11?

I've already changed the encryption file system startup to automatic, and everything that I can find online about how to enable encryption is just telling me to turn on the EFS system. I've gone into the Windows Registry and set the data value for NtfsDisableEncryption to 0, even though it already was, and did the same again using the fsutil command in the Terminal. Other than using external software, is there anything else that can be done to allow me to encrypt .zip files, or will I have to get external software?

The grayed out "Encrypt contents to secure data" option usually indicates that the feature is not available on your device. In Windows 11 Home, you can use the device encryption feature to encrypt your files and folders.

Here's how to turn on device encryption:

Press the Windows key + I to open Settings.

Click on "System".

Select "About".

Scroll down to the "Device specifications" section and look for "Device encryption".

If it says "Device encryption is not available", your device may not meet the hardware requirements for encryption. If it says "Device encryption is available", click on "Device encryption settings".

Click on "Turn on" to start the encryption process.

Once device encryption is turned on, your files and folders will be automatically encrypted. To check if a file is encrypted, right-click on it, select "Properties", and look for the "General" tab. Under "Attributes", there should be an "Encrypt contents to secure data" option. If it's checked, the file is encrypted.

Note that device encryption requires a Microsoft account and a TPM (Trusted Platform Module) chip. If your device doesn't have a TPM chip, you can still use BitLocker to encrypt your files, but it's only available on Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise.
