Windows 10: How do I update to Windows 10?

So this is the thing. I bought a laptop from a friend of mine super cheap. It had an activated version of Windows 8 originally, but said he wanted the media player so at some point he installed an un-activated version of 8.1 pro. Idk it's legitimacy or anything, it runs fine, but pops up a reminder to activate every few hours.

I would like to update to Windows 10, but it says I can't because my version of 8.1 isn't activated.

Can I restore it back to its first version, and if so, how? And Will this make me lose everything that's currently installed/saved? If not, what will I need to do to fix the problem, aside from obviously purchasing a new version of windows 10?

Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK
