How do I use anything-but-Edge to open PDFs in Windows 10?

There are many mechanisms for changing file associations. None of them seem to work. Here's what I've tried:

    • Right clicking the file, selecting the app used, electing to always use that app. Doesn't stick; reverts to Edge.
    • Editing the default app by file type, going to PDF, selecting something else. Doesn't stick; reverts to Edge.
    • Editing file types by app, going to Edge, selecting something else for PDF. Doesn't stick; reverts to Edge.

This is immensely frustrating. Here's a video of how one of these methods doesn't work at all:

  2. Trouble Opening PDF's

    Hi Parker,

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Community. We will assist you in resolving the issue.

Before assisting further, I would like to ask you few questions:

    • Does the issue persist in Edge browser?
    • Do you get similar error when you open the PDF file in Adobe reader?

Check if you are facing similar issue in Edge browser.

Step 1: Open PDF file in Adobe reader and check if you are facing similar issue.

To open PDF file directly from Adobe reader, follow the steps below:

    • Open Adobe application and click on Edit.
    • Click on Preferences and select Internet.
    • Uncheck Display PDF in Browser option and check if you are able to open the PDF file without getting the error code.

Step 2: If you are able to open PDF file in Adobe reader, I suggest you to
    Turn off Internet Explorer,
enable it again and check if the issue is resolved.

For further assistance, I suggest you to post your query in Adobe support forum.

    Thank you.

change default PDF viewer in MS Edge for PDFs opened by portals

I think your difficulty lies in using Edge, rather than another more general browser. For example:
Windows 10: How do I open PDF links in Edge so they are displayed by Adobe? - Windows Central Forums

    - suggests it can't be done in the case of Edge - but that of course is just one view.

If you were to use a different browser, you would be able to have hyperlink pdf's open in your default reader.

    Always worth more research..

Look at how Edge handles extensions differently- only from the Store. So no possibility of a 3rd party reader adding a pdf reader extension.

  4. How do I use anything-but-Edge to open PDFs in Windows 10?

Windows 10 - Outlook Hyperlinks and PDFs Opening in Edge Not Chrome

I want to once again use Chrome for URLs and Adobe Reader for PDFs, but lost this after a Windows 10 auto-update.

I now too have the situation where PDFs in emails I receive in Outlook (2010) open in Edge, and when I attach a PDF to an Outlook email it shows as an Edge doc. Also, URLs in Outlook Emails open in Edge. PDFs and URLs other than in Outlook open with my
    preferences.

I've reset all the defaults I can find to associate PDFs with Adobe Reader and URLs to Chrome. Also tried the suggested regedit change. Didn't help at all.

My Set Default Programs don't show Microsoft Outlook, just:

    • Microsoft account
    • Microsoft Edge
    • Microsoft family restrictions
    • Microsoft Solitaire Collection
Control Panel shows I have both Microsoft Office Click-to-Run 2010 (which includes Visio) and Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010 - English (which includes Outlook, Word, Excel, and Powerpoint).
