Windows 10: How do I watch movies and shows full screen without black bars on the sides with Surface...

I am watching torrented shows on my surface pro tablet with an HDMI cable (I have the mini DP to HDMI adapter made by Microsoft attached to an HDMI to HDMI cable) that connects to my older TV (Dynex model DX-32L152A11).

When I cast my computer browser on google chrome, there are black bars on the sides. And when I watch shows with black bars on the top and bottom, it ends up making the show have black bars on all 4 sides. When really, the proportions of the show are the same as the TV and if I could override it somehow and remove the bars on the top and bottom, it would fit the screen.

I’ve tried with streaming shows and downloading shows and they both have black bars on the top and bottom.

I’ve tried to change the ratio settings on the TV itself and nothing works. I think I need to change something in the computer settings so the screen itself is not as tall so it can fill the whole screen when I watch shows.

The problem is that the laptop’s screen is not as wide as the TV with its proportions which means it projects the computer onto the TV accurately, and leaves 2 black bars on the sides.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Thank you

My computer has a black bar on the side, how can I fix this?


I wasn't having any issues with the display before till I turned it on. There is a black bar on the side of the screen that pushes everything on the desktop to the side. I don't know what this is or why it's doing this. This was a windows 7, downloaded the windows 10 OS.

Is there anyway I can fix this? I've went through the display settings and nothing is out of order. I have yet to restore it and I wish not to but any suggestions will do.

When I PRT SC it doesn't show the bar. so but you can tell by the squished screen.

 

Black Bars on Sides of the Screen In-Game

As I understand whenever you run the game in lower resolution it does not work (Black bars).

Did you re-install graphics card drivers?

I suggest you to try the steps provided below and check if it helps.

Restart the computer a few times and check for Windows Updates.

In the Search box on the taskbar, enter Windows Update, select Windows Update. On the Windows Update page, select Check for updates.

Also refer to the thread for suggestions.

Some games in fullscreen have black bars on side.
