  2. Windows 11 Start Menu

I had extreme problems with the task bar in win 11. I use 3 screens and the task bar would appear in different screens at random after booting and rebooting. Some time there would be no icons or start menu button, that is rubbish any way even when it does work, very limited. I had lots of other issues all connected with the task bar. The windows personalise and task bar settings are more limited than it was on win 10. If you use task bar hide, it does not hide the task bar, just the icons. It is a total mess up and Microsoft will need to make win 11 work as well as win 10 in all aspects, not worse as it is right now. I have a very up to date high end modern PC with all the latest driver, another thing the Microsoft support team say will fix a bad windows 11.

I contacted windows support and they provided a link for a fresh clean install for windows 11. After I used this I had a total nightmare for 3 days solid trying to make win 11 work. In the end I used a systems back up revert to my systems image copy to restore my old windows 10, all is now well.

There are thousands of people having issues with win 11 task bar, I suggest you stay with win 10 for a while. Wait till the Microsoft team have actually made windows 11 to work as it should. There are many of complaints that win 11 has removed control of setting the task bar and placing it where ever people want it???? The brainless messing with a good thing and making it worse makes no sense.

    Windows 11 Start menu

Yes, live tiles are gone, in Windows 11, as is the capability of resizing the start menu, or for that matter, to relocate the task bar. I haven't a clue why Microsoft changed some of these things, or why they thought it was an improvement. Possibly, though, some of these features will be re-introduced in future feature updates.

    https://www.thewindowsclub.com/features-deprecated-or-removed-in-windows-11

The Start menu will be rejuvenated in Windows 11 and there will be few old features that will be removed. You will see the following functions to be gone from the Start menu in Windows 11:

    1. Live Tiles will no longer be available. There won’t be dynamic previews in the Start menu.
    2. Pinned apps or sites won’t be mitigated when you upgrade from Windows 10.
    3. Named groups and folders of apps are not supported. And also, the size of the layout can’t be adjusted currently.
I think that word "mitigated" should have been "migrated." In fact, the start menu comes full of apps you probably don't care about, and instead has none of the pinned icons you do care about. But it's easy enough to remove some of the unneeded icons, and re-pin your needed ones.

Also note that to see the complete list of apps, you have to click that small nondescript button, on the upper right of the start menu. Another thoroughly questionable change, in Windows 11.

My own preference is to only introduce changes which improve the product. Make it more intuitive, easier, faster at accomplishing the usual tasks. Instead, in Windows 11 and also in Office updated versions, we often see "change for the sake of change," not "change to something improved."

Windows 9 start menu in action

The only real usage issues with Windows 8/8.1 are the Start screen and Charms bar. Luckily they're doing away with the Charms bar and they've brought back the traditional Start menu, but with tiles.

I liked the tiles, but the fact that it needed a whole screen was not very productive unlike Windows 7.
