    How do you access a Win10 network from WinXP My Network Places?

    The Win10 computers can see and access the XP laptop, but the XP laptop cannot see the Win10 computers in "My Network Places". This seems to be a common problem with no workable solutions so far.

    The XP computer can open an Explorer window to WIN10 computers by searching for them in the search box by name, e.g. \\Computer1.The event log shows ID 1003 (Can't renew DHCP address), 8021 (Unable to retrieve list of servers from Browser Master) and 8023 (Browser service failed to retrieve backup list), which is also common.

    No comments about stop using XP please. That is not a viable alternative in this case.Thanks

    :)

  2. Win10 Jan 22 2018 file sharing with Windows XP and Vista

    OK, it's been awhile. I have figured out a bunch of issues, which I don't know how to solve, but have found workarounds.

    My 802.11 environment is polluted with numerous routers belonging to others, over which I have no control. These routers caused congestion with my router. As a result, I discovered that my new router, an ****, would cause my Win10 machine to occasionally
    time out and it would get a self-assigned 169.254.x.x IP address, but still receive a routable DHCP-assigned address for the router 10.0.0.1.. Many of my intermittent issues were attributable to this, because sometimes the addresses were assigned by the router
    correctly. So my shared resources would seem to "come and go"..

    To work around this problem, I removed the new **** router and put back in my network the original xfinity **** router. I was still getting some erroneous and intermittent issues, so I ran Cat5e wire between all the machines to the router, and used a hub
    (not switch) when I needed expansion.

    Now I have the following reliable shared connectivity:

    Win2K ->Win10

    Win2K ->Vista

    Win2K ->WinXP

    There is an interesting anomaly on the Win2K machine. Not only does it find the Workgroup network, it also finds an Unknown network. The only machine on the Unknown network is the Win10 machine. All the shared resources of the Win10 machine appear on
    both the Unknown and the Workgroup networks.

    Continuing with the connectivity:

    winXP -> Win2K

    WinXP ->Vista

    WinXP ->Win10

    Vista -> Win2K

    Vista -> Win10

    Vista -> WinXP

    Win10 -> Vista

    I do not have Win10 to WinXP or Win10 to Win2K connectivity.

    From the Win10 PC, I can ping both the WinXP and Win2K machines.

    The name resolution seems to be not working from the Win10 machine. This may be in some master browser limitation with Win10. I am thinking that the clue is somewhere in the Win2K report that the Win10 machine is on both a Workgroup network as well as
    an Unknown network, and that when the Win10 machine goes to look for connectivity, it is looking on the Unknown network and not on the Workgroup network. But somehow it is finding the Vista machine on the Workgroup network, so that may not be an issue. Not
    sure.

    Confusing. Very confusing.

    If anyone out there has resolved the Win10 to WinXP or Win10 to Win2K connectivity issue, I'd love your input!

    Thanks for your reply.

    Yes, yes and yes. And they also have the same workgroup name (I should have mentioned it was a workgroup network).

    Right now there are four active computers on the network:

    1. NetBScanner shows one of the three Win10 computers as the master browser.

    2. ipconfig shows all four have NetBios=enabled.

    3. All 4 show Computer Browser=running

    4. NetBScanner shows all computers by IP and name so I assume DNS is okay working somewhere.

    5. None of the network Properties dialog boxes of the four show the NetBios protocol installed like in the old days (I assume they're not to supposed to anymore).

    There's a lot of complex Technet traffic about this being broken in WIN10-1703. An example:

    --> Anyone else notice the network issues with Windows 10 Creators edition? <--

    I hoped that asking the question again in simple language would flush out some successful solutions. The only quick workaround I've come up with is to create a shortcut to Explorer on the Desktop that opens another computer by name or IP.

    Ah, "dsnisnt" must mean "dns isn't. Yes. I ran the scanner on all four computers. I also set the XP box to force it to be the master browser.

    What did you think about the example? Most of the net discussions focus on SMB, master browser or shares management.

    Hey rwhite1,
    Give this a try ...

    1. Shut down ALL the PCs
    2. Start the XP PC
    3. Once the XP PC is up and running ... start the Win10 PCs

    Note: Starting the XP PC first will hopefully make it he Master Browser.

    Eagle21:

    Yea, I read about that somewhere, but I haven't tried it yet. I will. Someone also said that they attached a router to the system that can be configured as a master browser worked for them. I guess that might be because a router is version independent.

    Thanks for the idea.

    Yes, I you have a router that supports USB File Sharing. You can use an external USB HDD or a USB Stick and set up the File Sharing in the router, which will make your router the Master Browser. Once you set it up, you will probably have to shut down all PCS and then restart them for it to take affect.

    Note: I have 3 yr old netgear router set up with USB File Sharing and it uses SMBv1, so I have to have the SMBv1 client running on all my Win 10 PCs for things to work. I do not have SMBv1 server running on any of the PCs thou.

    Note: SMBv1 is deprecated. See more about Win10 (1709/FCU) and SMBv1 ... https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...r-version-1709

    How do you access a Win10 network from WinXP My Network Places?

    Hi there
    ensure that IPV4 is being used -- not sure if XP even with service pack 3 applied. can use IPV6.

    Otherwise there shouldn't be any problem whatsoever - can your XP machine for example see phone / tablet etc. In some cases networking actually works BETTER on XP than W10. !!! --Try also switching firewalls OFF and don't make any Home groups. Also enable sharing and network discovery --ensure networks are NOT set to 'public and I think XP doesn't like 128 bit encryption - set in networking properties,

    I use an XP VM regularly --have studio and Vinyl record cutting gear / software running on it and have no probs with XP seeing rest of my network which is a mix of Windows 10, Linux NAS servers, tablet and two phones. I don't though connect XP to the external Internet.

    Cheers

    I haven't been able to find a solution anywhere. The consensus on the net seems to be that MS doesn't intend to fix it because, as Eagle 51 said above, the needed service has been deprecated. Since the computers are all still visible to each other by IP, I just worked around it by creating a shortcut on the Desktop with either of the following in the Location entry:

    Explorer \\COMPUTERNAME or Explorer \\IPADDRESS (e.g. Explorer \\192.168.1.1)
