Windows 10: How do you change the default PDF viewer to view PDF's in File Explorer?

My company installed PDF exchange as an alternate to Bluebeam. So naturally I use Bluebeam to open all PDF files; however, the Microsoft File Explorer Viewer uses something else, not sure if its using PDF exchange or some other viewer, but I want to use Bluebeam. What can I do to change the default viewer in File Explorer, to view PDF's using Bluebeam?

Default PDF Viewer changed to Edge or Acrobat after each PDF download

I'm using SumatraPDF to view PDF files.

Whenever I open or save a PDF file in Firefox, the Default PDF viewer is changed from SumatraPDF to Edge.

If Acrobat Reader is installed and set as the default viewer, the setting doesn't change after each download.

This appears to be a security feature to encourage PDF viewing in Microsoft-approved viewers that might prevent exploits.

I've tried setting SumatraPDF as the default via:

-click Start | Settings | Apps | Default Apps

-click Choose default applications by file type

-Select .pdf

-Choose SumatraPDF

The window closes as though it has crashed (no error is displayed onscreen or in the event log), and the setting does not change.

If I change the default via:

-right-click a PDF file in Windows Explorer

-select Open With | Choose another app

-select SumatraPDF, tick "Always use this app to open .pdf files"

-click OK

the default does change and the entry in "Choose default applications by file type" is also updated, but the setting reverts to Edge after a new PDF download.

I've Using:

Windows 21H2 19044.2728

Edge 111.0.1661.54

Can this feature be disabled (via a Windows or registry setting)? I accept the risk of using a PDF viewer other than Edge or Acrobat.

Yea. That's what I have been doing. It works for a little while, but then Windows changes it back to the Explorer PDF Viewer.

Have you set your default PDF reader to Nuance Power PDF Advanced?

Settings>Apps>Default Apps>Choose default apps by file type>scroll down to .pdf on the left side of your screen, then click on the default app (most likely Edge). A list of available PDF reading apps should show up . . . click on your Nuance PDF reader and select it as your default. As you can see, I use Adobe Reader. *Smile
