Can't change background; some settings are hidden or managed by your organization

    Hello!

Could you please help me with the following issue?

I am unable to change my desktop background or theme. It says that "some settings are hidden or managed by your organization" and the options for changing desktop background are greyed out.

This is my personal computer with a clean Windows 10 install and I am the only user with administrative rights.

    What should I do?

  3. Desktop background will not change.

    Hi

    Welcome to Microsoft community.

If you're experiencing issues with changing your desktop background and it remains black regardless of your attempts, there are several troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the problem. Here are some solutions to consider:

    1. Check Ease of Access Settings:
      • Sometimes, certain Ease of Access settings can affect the desktop background. Go to "Start" > "Settings" > "Ease of Access" > "Display" and make sure the "Show desktop background" option is enabled.
    2. Check Group Policy Settings:
      • If your computer is part of a network or managed by an organization, there might be Group Policy settings restricting background changes. In this case, you might need administrative access to modify these settings.
    3. Uninstall the antivirus software.
      • The third-party antivirus software may modify the system Settings, causing the wallpaper display error.
    4. Update Graphics Drivers:
      • Outdated or corrupted graphics drivers can cause display-related issues. Visit your graphics card manufacturer's website (e.g., NVIDIA, AMD, Intel) and download the latest drivers for your GPU.
    5. Reset TranscodedWallpaper:
      • This solution involves resetting the TranscodedWallpaper file, which stores the desktop background settings.

        Follow these steps:

        a. Press "Windows key + R" to open the Run dialog.

        b. Type and press Enter.

        c. Locate the "TranscodedWallpaper" file and delete it (you may need administrative permissions).

        d. Close File Explorer and try changing your desktop background again.
    6. Use Another User Account:
      • Create a new user account and see if the issue persists when logged in with the new account. If the problem is limited to your current user profile, the new account should not experience the same issue.
    7. Perform a System File Check:
      • Open Command Prompt as an administrator (right-click the Start button and choose "Windows Terminal (Admin)" or "Command Prompt (Admin)").

        sfc /scannow
      • Type and press Enter. This command will scan and repair any corrupted system files that may be affecting the desktop background.
Please feel free to let me know if you have any further updates, thanks.

    Best regards
