How do you create Message Rules for Windows Live Mail in Windows 10?

    Hello.

We used to have several "Message Rules" organize incoming email in Windows Live Mail. How do you set up Message Rules or the equivalent in Windows 10?

    Thanks.

  3. How to Create "Rules" in "Mail" (Live Mail) (image 1) - Not in Outlook Mail (image 2)

    Thank you, Don.

I am sure I am making some mistake somewhere but I do not know exactly what and where?

    Issues:

    1. While I open email client Windows Live Mail 2012, I cannot receive mail from ...@live.in
    and ...@gmail.com

    2. While I open email client Thunderbird 45.6.0, I can receive mail from ...@gmail.com but cannot receive mail
    only from ...@live.in

    ---------------------------------------------

    Email client:

    Windows Live Mail 2012 Properties

    Tab 1: General

Name: .....@live.in (I'm not sure if it's necessary to add @live.in, probably not?)

    Email address: .....@live.in

    Reply address: .....@gmail.com

    Tab 2: HTTP Server

Server URL: https://mail.services.live.com/DeltaSync_v2.0.0/sync.aspx (I'm not sure if this default address still holds good?)

    Login name: ....@live.in

    Result: FAILED.

Unable to send or receive messages for the account.

    Server Error: 3219

    Server: 'https://mail.services.live.com/DeltaSync_v2.0.0/Sync.aspx'

Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x8DE00005

    ------------------------------------------------------------

    Email client:

    Thunderbird

    Accounts settings:

    Email address: .....@live.in

    Reply address: .....@gmail.com

    Outgoing Server (SMTP):

    Google Mail - smtp.gmail.com (Default)

    Server settings:

Server name: imap-mail.outlook.com (I got it from Outlook Mail >> Options >> Accounts >> IMAP settings but I am not sure if this is correct entry for this field?

    Port: 993

    User Name: .....@live.in

    Connection security: SSL/TLS

    Outgoing Server (SMTP):

    Server name: smtp.gmail.com

    User Name: .....@live.in

    Connection security: STATTLS

    Result: FAILED.

Login to server imap-mail.outlook.com is incorrect

As I do not remember any other pw I couldn't get entry.

Hope, these details will help you guide me better. Thanks.

How do you create Message Rules for Windows Live Mail in Windows 10?

Windows 10 mail is just a front-end to whatever mail service you're using. So you would setup your rules there. For instance, if you are using a Hotmail, live.com, outlook.com, msn.com, etc.. email, you would setup your rules on the website for those services.

I should have mentioned that I'm not referring to web-based email where you go to the site and read the mail there. I'm referring to Windows Live Mail that has been around since before web mail and that downloads the email onto your computer. Not sure how else to describe it. I've attached a jpg showing the desktop icon.

    Thanks.

My understanding is that Windows Live Mail no longer works properly on Windows 10 (I don't use it, so I don't know for sure).

What are you using for your mail provider?

We have Windows 10 and use Windows Live Mail on two computers. The message rules work on one where they were grandfathered in when upgrading. The other computer is one that did not have email until Windows 10 was acquired and is the one we'd like to be able to create message rules on.

The message rule we want to create is one that directs emails to different accounts into the folders for each account, so for example, email for David goes in the David folder; email for Sue goes in the Sue folder, and so on. Do you know if this is possible in Windows 10?

How do you create Message Rules for Windows Live Mail in Windows 10?

The problem isn't WLM & W10; it's that WLM uses an old protocol to link to Outlook.com (Outlook, Hotmail, Office 365.com, etc.) that MS is in the process of deprecating from every Outlook.com account, so that MS can operate all their corporate & consumer mail services on the same platform.

They did issue a series of WLM patches in December & January that were intended to provide WLM connectivity to the newly required protocol -- but they would crash WLM running on W10. Each time the patch failed on W10, they'd issue a new patch that would work on W7 & W8/8.1 but not on W10. But -- of course -- MS expects every W7 or W8.x user to have already migrated to W10?!

Because MS has refused to update WLM due to the creation of their first UWP/Metro version of Mail, Calendar, & People in W8, they finally gave up and advised every WLM/W10 user to shift to either W10 Mail which has far less functionality, to view Outlook.com in their web browser of choice, or to purchase Outlook 2016/365. As a small sop, MS is giving former WLM users a free 1-year trial subscription to Outlook 365. (See Windows Live Mail 2012 will not connect to Outlook.com for more details)

As for me, I've already converted over to a commercial e-Mail client. It has extensive rules capability to manage mail, & I suspect it would meet your requirements.

    Hmmm...

    and then...

Seems to me WLM isn't working properly on 10, which is what I said, and you said wasn't the case.. then you said it was?

    I understand your confusion.

I meant to indicate that the sole reason for these patches -- which didn't work on W10 -- is due to the Outlook.com protocol changes.

If you don't use WLM with Outlook.com, then you had no need to patch WLM; and, thereby, WLM is fine under W10.

If you do use WLM with Outlook.com, then you must patch WLM as soon as your account was converted over; the patched WLM is fine on W7 or 8/8.1, but crashes on W10.

In WLM select Folders tab and then Message Rules.
I have 3 POP e-mail accounts from my ISP and they work great in WLM on W10.
