Windows 10: How do you re-enable the default sound device (my HDTV I'm using as a monitor)? I can't...

The only sound I can get now is just headphones.

No sound on HDTV via HDMI

I have a HDTV connected to my Windows 10 laptop via HDMI, but there's no sound coming through. I have selected Realtek High Definition Audio as the default audio device. I note that the 'monitor' appears as 'Generic PnP monitor' in the device list - is
this why the PC isn't putting out audio via the HDMI cable?

To assist you better, I suggest you to answer the below questions.

• When will the sound disable, when playing through main monitor or the extended monitor?
• Did you try enabling the sound from the sound drivers and check if it helps?
• Since from when are you facing this issue?

This issue causes because the monitor automatically takes the HDMI sound as the Default input. Disable and enable the speakers and check if it helps.

I suggest you to try the below steps and check if it helps.

• Right click on the volume control and then
  Properties,
• When you connect the HDMI it becomes the default output device, even though it has no speakers.
• You need to change this back to "Speakers" and set as default.

No sound on HDTV via HDMI

I've had the issue for a year or so, I use a set of speakers plugged into the 3.5mm analogue out to get sound.

I haven't made any changes, and I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the audio device and the monitor, checking for driver updates etc.

There's sound coming from the laptop speakers, and the analogue audio out when connected, just not via the HDMI out.

Is the issue related to Windows recognising the HDTV as a generic monitor as opposed to a HDTV?
