How do you restore the complet file system from filehistory.

FileHistory stops working

Hello

In have FileHistory backup not working correctly.

After my desktop backup for the portioned drives C: and D: stopped say 6 weeks ago. I have tried a number of suggestions from the form but have not got things working until yesterday 27/6/2020.

After using the same USB extension drive to back up my laptop which worked.

I tried the same usb derive with the desktop and found that by selecting the drive as new a new list of folders to be backedup was created only for drive C: and the FileHistory back up worked again.

Now IF I add any folder on derive D: to the backup list FileHistory stops working.

If I remove the D: related folder FileHistory works again.

When FileHistory stops working event viewer shows the 1st error message .

In the past when FileHistory didn't work EV showed both errors.

Unable to scan user librariles for changes and perform backup.

C:\Users\pflet\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory\Configuration\Config

File/directory was not backed up due to being encrypted or insefficent permissions.

D:\System Volume Information.

As enyone seen this?

Could this be the System volume information folder on D: ?

Can this folder be replaced / repaired ? I carn't see it being encrypted. Dont Know about permissions.

Restore filehistory to a new computer

I would have thought this would be very simple, but this is becoming very difficult. This is for Windows 10.

The stability of Computer A is becoming more and more questionable. I decided I should keep backups of my files. I was able to copy a sample batch of files using filehistory (which was very glitchy) and now my files are in the drive with a date appended
to each file.

To experiment, I plugged my external drive into Computer B and attempted to copy the sample batch. However, the filehistory program insisted I turn on backups, which later resulted in creating a backup for Computer B. It didn't even recognize my files from
Computer A.

I otherwise could manually copy each file, but it would require an extraordinary effort as there is a date appended to each individual file. Who programmed this kind of behavior? I am not willing to change the file name for 10,000+ files. Especially when
it comes to program files, which probably would no longer work if the file name has dates appended to its file name.

I hope this can be done. If not, I find filehistory useless as if the computer crashes, it would not be able to restore files to the original computer. Maybe if I can turn off that appending nonsense, I could manually copy the files from the drive?

Thanks for replying . I've been away from the computer.

I have had another try this afternoom.

I did think we where getting some where when FileHstory produced a 2nd backup on the E: drive, but still failed to include My documents , My photos and other folders all the most likly to have changed over time.

So again fileHistory is excluding key folders that appen to be linked to liberys this all worked ok about 3 weeks back.

However it did include a "Test folder" this time.

So I have deleted from C: users ect the files in the configuration folder and the FileHistory folder on the E: drive.

I also used settings – backup and requested stop using the E: drive.

Thinking this would set all back to the beginning.

I then reinstated the E: , that prodused the default backup folder list for folders on the C: drive. But the list did have some of the folders listed on the D: drive so it was a prevous list, not a full reset.

I was hoping this would making a complete restart.

I have tryed the dackup button

and backup as place a new filehistory folder on the E: drive but with a number of configuration and date folders labeled 1 to 6 all empty.

So for the monent the progect as gone backwords.
