Windows 10: How does Notepad and MS Paint get their icons on Windows 10 2004?

Where is Windows getting their icons from?

%SystemRoot%\System32\notepad.exe and %SystemRoot%\System32\mspaint.exe seems to have an icon that shows in the taskbar, File Explorer, Start menu, properties dialog, etc.

But %SystemRoot%\notepad.exe doesn't show an icon anywhere despite both that file and the Notepad in System32 having the same file size and SHA-512 hash.

When I copied %SystemRoot%\notepad.exe, %SystemRoot%\System32\notepad.exe, and %SystemRoot%\System32\mspaint.exe to one of my user directories, none of them have an icon.

I opened all 3 files in Resource Hacker and noticed that there is no "Icon" and "Icon Group" folders, which means that both Notepad and MS Paint doesn't have any icons.

Method: 1

I suggest you to follow the below steps.

• Press windows key on the keyboard.
• Type “Paint” & select the paint icon & hit enter.

Method: 2

• Press windows + R.
• Type “MSpaint” hit enter.

The King is Dead; Long Live the King - MS Paint's Announced Demise

Microsoft has confirmed that it will continue to offer its graphics program Paint.

In a recent update, it had listed Paint as a feature that would be either removed or no longer developed.

Paint, renowned for its simplicity, has been part of the Windows operating system since its launch in 1985.

Microsoft suggested it would not remain on Windows 10 by default but did say it would be available for free on the Windows Store.

Here s a partial solution. Works for Windows 10 as well.

This will clear it but of not disable list ie you would have to do again later etc.
