    How does Windows name duplicate files?


    Suppose there is file named file.txt, and I copy it and paste it in the same folder. What will be the new file's name? What will be the names of the files created by pasting multiple times?

    Will the first copy be file.txt (copy), file.txt (1) or file(1).txt?

    Will the second (and above) copy/ies be file.txt (2nd copy), file.txt (copy)(2), file.txt (2) or file(2).txt?

    Or something else?

    I am writing a Python script that automatically deletes duplicate files with the same size. And I currently do not have access to a machine running Windows due to Covid-19 lockdown.

    Any help will be appreciated. A screen-grab with duplicate files will be very very helpful.

    Finding duplicate files

    Hey hey,

    During the years the backups have just accumulated in random places, essentially, and I would like to clean up. Is there a program that can search for duplicate files? And by that I mean identical files. I tried dupeGuru, but that somehow found ... all files to be identical I guess? Like how a bunch of jpg's with different names, sizes and locations being marked 100% identical, or how a bunch of xls-files with completely different everything also were 100% matches with each other. I don't need any fancy functions, just a list of the files that share the name and filesize and created/last write dates.

    Thank you for the suggestion. I need to see a list of duplicate files and select those I want to eliminate. Does the program you suggested compare file content or do they simply point out duplicate
