  1. How far are Mobo drivers behind?

    Hello All,
Current system is an ASUS pre-installed with 8 and updated to 8.1.
None of the individual components, H61 M/B, CPU i7 3770s, GPU GTX 760, SSD are more than 18 months old.
Am I right in assuming that 10 will support 'out the box' this H/W?

Excellent site by the way, sheer joy to go to an IT site not overrun by Linux Tin foil hats.

    Activation after replaceing motherboard

Is the replacement mobo the same mobo as the old mobo?

If it is, nothing will change. If the mobo is different, you could connect the hdd, it'll probably install drivers for the new mobo.

But it'll keep the drivers from the previous mobo on the hdd as well

It may or may not stay activated tho. You'll have to give MS a ring

BUT, if the old and the new mobo use different chipsets, then it'd be better doing a clean install.

Because you will have probs, if you install different chipset drivers / and drivers on one hdd, it'll probably crash sooner or later

  3. Audio Stuttering/Glitching

Identical issue here with me, except I have an Asus Z170-A mobo.

I just purchased an Asus ROG STRIX Z270 mobo and it comes tomorrow. I will see if it's a motherboard problem, or some sort of grounding issue.

BTW the audio distortion occurs when high CPU usage. Try running Prime95 and then playing something on youtube and you will notice that audio.

Sometimes even with less cpu usage, 50% or so, will cause that issue with DPC latency being high. So far I have no clue how to fix it, and I'm about to see if a new mobo even does it.

    Hello pdunderhill,
Yes, Windows 10 will work. I would still recommend you to update the drivers after install. The Nvidia drivers for Windows 8.1 works fine in Windows 10 so far. The Intel Chipset Drivers also work well (make sure to get the latest version), and Intel Rapid Storage and Management Engine also work.
They did appear initially with a warning sign in Device Manager but after updating drivers they work excellently.
You can see in the Device Manager:

DirectX games also work well, performance is mostly the same, perhaps the system is a bit more stable.

Just because these components are new to you doesn't mean they are new as far as the OS is concerned. You could buy a brand new (never before owned) 486 system tomorrow and I guarantee it wouldn't run much of anything. What's important is whether the technology is supported, not how old it is.

For instance, the i7 3770s is an Ivy Bridge CPU and was released in the middle of 2012 (so it's more like 2.5 years old). Still not that old really, and fully supported by 10.

The H61 chipset was launched Q1 2011, so that's almost 4 years old. Still supported though.

The GTX 760 was released in July of 2013, so that's about 18 months old. Yep, supported.

    Hi there

If the mobo works in W8.1 then I'd recommend doing an UPDATE while testing W10 rather than a fresh install. Many times drivers etc don't have W10 versions yet so they won't be found or be "manually" installable on W10 - especially if W10 enforces "Signed drivers". However when doing an update programs will usually run - whether windows during updating has some sort of internal "compatibility" mode built in or whether IT can install working W8.1 drivers while doing an update I don't know.

After a W10 update install you can then see if there are any more newer versions by checking for updates again. Here also some new updates might be found (INTEL etc) which won't work always if you start from a CLEAN W10 install as there's no previous version to "update".

At RTM time then I'd go for a clean install as drivers should be available by then. Currently I'd go for an Upgrade although in the past I've usually recommended doing a clean install.

    BEFORE UPGRADING TAKE A BACKUP.

    Cheers

  7. Well, taken the 'brave' step and seems to to work well, took about an hour and O/S will need some tidying up.
Intel mobo drivers seem to work well, Steam I'm going to regret a 200GB download, otherwise I think I'll let the O/S do it's business.
