Windows 10: How may I format a hard drive to be usable for main windows 10 installation boot?"

USB installation process rejects my hard drive because it's not formatted properly. MBR is no good, it has to be GPT. Where are the instructions to create a bootable hard drive?

2 of my internal hard drives, not been reconized!!

With both hard drives plug in ,I get to the page to where to install windows7pro , none of the disk are usable , ""windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space. The partition contains one or more dynamic volumes that are not supported for installation" Maybe if I tryed to install windowsXP and than do the rest that you suggested, (just a thought)

 

Making a hard drive usable

Depending on what the drive is, and how it is connected - you may have to do certain other steps in order for windows to "see the drive".

A brand new drive will be unformatted and so needs to be formatted before use.

If it is internally connected via a SATA connector, even if you plug it in and the BIOS sees it, it would still probably need formatting.

If, however, you have bought a drive connected via USB then it may still need formatting.

There are various ways Windows can do a backup, a system image, a routine backup of your user account data, or a "mirror" of folders, automatically kept synchronised.

Formatting a second "backup" drive is usually created as a "simple volume" and the help section in Windows 10 will show you clear instructions on how to do this.

If you can supply any more specific messages or background on what the PC is complaining about, then we may be able to narrow down what the problem is.

In Windows 10, you can easily format a hard drive or a partition by accessing Computer Management. For us to assist you, we suggest that you follow the steps listed below:

• Press the Start button.
• Type Computer Management.
• On the left side, click on Disk Management under Storage.
• Locate the drive that you want to format.
• Once located, right-click on the drive and choose Format.

If the hard drive has not been formatted with the steps that we have provided above, we recommend that you contact the manufacturer of your hard drive. Some hard drive requires a software that you'll need to use just to format it.
