Windows 10: How safe is the Cloud?

What kind of response did you expect ? An admission that I am a professional hacker ?

Most times I forget how to get into my own accounts.
I never said I could hack into anyone's account or a cloud of any kind.

My point is there are people who can and will do this given a motive and time to do it.

This is one instance I'm speaking of.

Sorry, but part of the fear that most folks express when being worried about their personal data being "hacked" in "the cloud" is put there by the Entertainment Industry that continues to dramatically overplay the ease with which secured systems are "hacked".

While admittedly, the US Federal Government Agencies consistently get the worst scores when it comes to securing access (largely because they hire IT folks due to their "ethnicity" not due to their technical skills), commercial cloud services have an axe to grind when it comes to SECURING their customer data. A commercial cloud-service provider with a publicized data breach would be out of business overnight!

While personally, I don't use the cloud to store valuable information, I do keep my money in a bank. And, banks get robbed all the time! And, banks go under, as well! But, overall, I'd rather have my money in a bank, than in wrapped bills stuffed under my mattress. The utility value of having it in a bank far outweighs the risks of having it stolen.

And, that's much the same situation with cloud services. Folks who need that kind of anywhere-access are willing to live with a risk (admittedly, very, very small) of having their data compromised for the utility value the service provides.

 

The average computer user isn't going to know the first thing about or even have the right tools to hack into someones account. I was a little leary about using OneCloud in the beginning because of the possibility of it being hacked. Then I got thinking about the fact that even though I didn't put it there a lot of my personal info is already available for hackers. I like the fact that I can now access my data with all my devices.

 

I saw several tips dated back in 2014 about various options (Other than DropBox) for creating your own OneDrive arrangement which would be locally hosted on your own system(s). For my particular needs I am now revisiting these options as the latest Business One Drive "Next Generation" is nothing more than another attempt to rebrand a failed solution.

The possibilities offered by OneDrive seem too good to be true and it doesn't take long to find out that they ARE too good to be true. As soon as you pass more than a few hundred files you end up wishing you had never heard of it. Sharepoint never will be a "solution" for most companies (or personal use). Does anyone here have any ideas on the best way forward now that we are two years further along for doing this?

I have a 150/50 broadband connection and would like to be able to set something up to allow the 40 employees at the office have most of the same functionality as ODB but without all the limitations and problems inherent in Sharepoint.

This setup needs to be a native Windows program that offers multiple access methods to 40 users and has the ability to set some files to stay "on the server" as a type of backup while others would stay in full-sync mode so every system each user is on always has the latest copy whether or not thy have Internet access at every second.

My previous experiences with using NAS devices for this have shown that the performance on any of them is poor when compared to the same functions being hosted on a dedicated system. Even when running Windows 10 Home or Win10 Pro rather than Win Server. Using a system with an I5 or I7 processor with 16GB RAM, Dual 1TB SSD drives in a RAID configuration, each of the 40 Users would be allotted 20GB (total 800GB) with the other 200GB held for OS and system software.

I am aware that the SSD's would not be able to provide much of a speed advantage due to the limitations of the internet access but the long-term lifespan of the SSD's and the fact they are now affordable would make the additional cost not so hard to manage.

I could set up shared folders accessed by something like BT SYNC or similar but would like to know if another way would be best. If anyone has already done something like this I would appreciate any info.

 

I suggest you create a new thread for this, as it might gain more visibility. You also fail to mention what you find so limiting about current solutions, and just wave your hands and say it won't work for you. You should say EXACTLY what problems you're experiencing and why it doesn't work.
