How set up dual boot with two version of Windows 10

I have an image of my entire disk which includes a version of Windows 10. I have now set up a new partition and would like to install that version of Windows 10 in that partition. Then I would like to install a different "clean" version of Windows 10 in the old partition. Then I would set up a dual boot How do I place that image in the new partition? I use Macrium Reflect - but it doesn't have an option to do this. Perhaps there's another free imaging app that will do this?

    :)

    Hi,

Dual boot provides users with configuration settings where they can have two or more operating systems installed on the computer. For us to further rectify your concern in creating a second bootable partition with Windows 7, follow the procedures given by
MVP Andre posted on this thread:

. This link will redirect you to the article with instructions and things to remember when creating or setting up a partition in Windows 10.

Feel free to post again should you have further questions.

    Regards.

When you reimage it`s gonna put the drive back to how it was when you made that image.

After you reimage you could use Partition Wizard to shrink that install partition and slide it to the right or where ever you want it.

But why don`t you just shrink your current install to make room for your new install ?

Why are you re-imaging it in the 1st place ?

I'll shrink my current install to make room for my new install. But I've been warned that some files in my new install might get confused during the installation and be placed in the current OS (if they're both Windows - which they are). This is my concern. If it happens I won't know about it. Then, if I want to image just the old OS, the new OS might not work properly. In other words, the OSs will be tied together.

I use the images as my backup.

Not sure who warned you of that, totally untrue, the only thing they`ll share is the EFI partition if you are installing in UEFI, but that is totally normal. ( There has to be at least 1 Active Boot Partition ) which you already have.

As long as you only image that install partition, and give it a unique name, you`ll be fine if you have to reimage later on. W10Pro1, W10Pro2 etc

You will even see a message when re-imaging "All drives/Partitions will be put back to how they were when the image was made"

Before you install your 2nd W10 and you have your drive setup, post a picture of Disk Management, and we`ll see if it`s ready to go.

In order to post a picture or snip you have to choose "Go Advanced" in your reply and use the small paper clip icon to upload a picture.

Attached is a picture of my Disk Management as it is now.

OK, Than you. Now, where do I go from here? Do I get involved with UEFI or not. If not, I would shrink my C: partition and load my clean install of W10 in the new partition. I have plenty of room.

What do you mean "get involved with UEFI" ? I thought you said that`s all you have ???

Where is your original Windows 10 install ?

And please post a full pic of the drive you have ready for your 2nd install of 10, we don`t need to see all the other drives. Use the snipping tool.

And I see another problem, Disk 1 is marked Active, it should not be marked Active if it`s an internal Data hard drive.

But we can work on that later.

OK, I got you confused with another thread I`m working on.

But now you have me a bit confused on what you actually want to do. *Shock Maybe *Smile

So you want W7 and 2 versions of W10 on Disk 0 ??? One created from an image you already have, and the other a clean install, correct ?

And you can`t get involved with UEFI because your W7 install is MBR, if you made any changes W7 would not boot.

OK Post a DM shot of the drive you want to do this on with the new partition you said you created when you can *Smile

Brian, I am the one who told him that. I told him that a dual boot will have both OS boot files in the same partition. That was in his first thread a few months ago. As far as what he wants to do: from the thread he started yesterday, this is what he said he wanted to do.

He said nothing about Windows 7. So, I'm not sure what he wants to do. Nisko, I don't know why you would want 2 installs of the same OS and I asked yesterday. Now you want to install Windows 7 and Windows 10. If you could tell us exactly what you want to do, we would be better able to help. Let @AddRAM tell you what to do, I'll stay out of this. Just make sure you understand all the options you have and what will happen when you decide to uninstall one of the operating systems and what you will have to do to fix it. Have you ever restored an OS with Macrium and have you made external media to do it? Last we talked about Macrium you were not familiar with it and were pretty hesitant about using it. I hope AddRam will go slow with you and make sure you understand everything.

It would be better if you posted a screenshot of your whole Disk Management so we could see all of it. The last screenshot you posted shows the C drive as the system drive. The System Drive is where your boot files reside. That makes a big difference.

I assumed he was also going with 7 because it`s already installed, we`ll just have to wait for him to post a shot of the install drive he wants to use. *Smile

And a clearer explanation of his plan.

I totally agree with you about the boot files being on 1 single Active SR partition if he goes MBR, and that`s what I told him too, but I thought he was using EFI, I got a bit mixed up there because I was working on another thread *Redface

I just meant that each install would not be sharing files during the install. Makes sense Yes ?

And his Disk 0 looks strange, the W7 partition is marked Active and yet he has a System Reserved partition, but we can`t see it all.

Everything has to be on C. It is marked Active and System. It doesn't look like the System Reserved is being used at all.

Another factor (I cannot see the donwload files from my phone is that you limited to only 4 primary partitions on the drive. If all 4 are in use, it is not easy to install a new OS as well. One way round this is to install new OS in a virtual hard drive or on a second drive.
