  1. How shall users upgrade to free Windows 10 after July 29, 2016?

    Sorry to hear that PAul.

Very little to go on though.
    - Browsers screwed up, couldn't download WMC using Administrator command prompt, one of my hdds not recognized.
What browsers - how were they screwed up?
WMC was depreciated in Win10 - I don't know what you mean
I've seen other posts where a drive is not recognized - the fix was to add a drive letter
.... but a Clean install has only the drive that receives the install connected.

Since you restored the Win7 Macrium backup, there's nothing I can offer, no troubleshooting can be done at this point.

I don't know if I have the correct build or if I did something wrong.
    I don't know either *Wink
If you had Win7 Professional, Upgraded to Win10 Pro and Win10 was activated, and you followed the Clean install tutorial, then I don't know what happened. A Clean install is the best, by far, way to run Win10.

Maybe it's a matter of expectations - nothing is carried over from the previous Windows ... because it is a Clean install.
Maybe it's a matter of old habits - Win10, in almost every case, delivers the best drivers or your machine. You do not have to download drivers from the OEM.

You didn't say where you got the Win10 ISO,
I think you should have downloaded Windows 10 English x64 (not N, not single license)
If you used the Media Creation Tool, did you download the tool or use an old copy. Hint: download the tool anew.

I'm a little confused by your Specs - SysMfgr: HP 4530S | Other info: Self built
Two machines? Which one are you working the issue?

The only magic to troubleshooting is following a prescribed methodology.

and the Your system is Win7 Professional? Specs say Win10 Pro, so that's a guess on my part.

So, what do you want to do? Ungrade the restored Win7 or try a Clean install again?

  2. Thanks very much for reply,
First off, I didn't restore w7 to PC, but the upgrade to w10. - That's the one I restored.
All I can say is that the upgrade is great on both machines.
It's the clean install that is terrible.
BTW - I know that WMC was eliminated in w10, but I was able to restore it on both machines with a Mega download that I got from Seven Forums , and it it works fine on both laptop and pc.
Perhaps the dl I used is ng and I'll follow Brinks link. (I got the w10 link from this forum).
I appreciate all the time you've given me.

The reason I wanted to do a clean install on w7 and then upgrade to w10, is because I have my purchased cd and I know that will give me a good download.
It might take a little longer, but I'll try your link first.
The clean install I want to do is on the PC, because I originally installed it in 2012 and it's time to clean out all the junk.
The laptop is only a year old and had a clean install to begin with and the upgrade to w10,from w7, is great.
Just saw your question about OS on both machines - W10 Professional.

    Thanks again,

    Paul

PS: How come there is no way to give Rep?
Isn't this part of Seven Forums?

  3. My mistake - you restored Win10 not Win7.

WMC: I thought that's what you might have done - thanks for the clarification.

It's possible that the dl is ng and it's possible that you grabbed the wrong one. Follow the tutorial verbatim and everything should go well. If you're not sure about something - ask.

Purchased CD?? What is that? Did you purchase Win10 or is that Win7 that you purchased? I 'm not sure what
I know that will give me a good download means - download what?

Ok, you're working on the self build PC - right?
The best advice I can offer is to not think of Win10 as Win7 - follow the tut and let Windows do it's updates, there isn't much else to do but check DevMgr for flagged devices and get only those drivers.

Of course you have to install 3rd party software - it's best to get current versions from the vendor's site. there are a lot of things you might no longer need - Win10 has a bunch of native features (mounting images, Virtual machines, Burning discs...)

I mentioned this before, but it's important. If you use the Media Creation Tool (MCT) to create the Win10 installation media, you have to download a fresh copy of the MCT - don't use an old copy you downloaded a month or more ago.

You're welcome - that's why I post on the DM forums

  4. How shall users upgrade to free Windows 10 after July 29, 2016?

    Thanks Bill,

Yes, I was referring to the cd I bought for W7.
I thought if I couldn't get this to work, I would just do a clean install of W7 and then do the upgrade to W10.

Thanks for the heads up on Rep.

I don't see the "thumbs up" under user name - if I find it, I'll Rep you.

That would work too, it's just extra work.

  9. It's really only one extra step,
since I would have to reinstall all my programs on the clean W10 install anyway.
I'm still going to follow Brink's link first and see if that works better.

Now it's a matter of principle! *Eek

I have read after August 2, when the new ISO is released, Microsoft is changing the rules a little bit. There is going to be limit on the amount of times you can clean install and have it automatically activate over the Internet. When you reach that limit, you will have to call Microsoft to activate. It was in a article about tying your activation to your Microsoft account.

Have you read anything about this? I hope it's not true, I like to clean install with the release of each new ISO.

That's the way it is with product key activations now. I don't think that applies or will apply to digital entitlement activations until there is a widely circulated way to spoof the Hardware ID that makes the digital entitlement unique to each computer. The key factors in digital entitlement activation is the unique Hardware ID of the computer it is on and the version of Windows 10 being installed. There is no reason for Microsoft to track or block activations on the same computer of the same version of Windows. I have not heard anything about Microsoft limiting digital entitlement activations.
