  2. is N95 is as smart as the name (smart phone)?

Hi, i bought N95 (previously i am using N73 ME).

i found many drawbacks in N95, here are few...

    1. With N95 we have a feature of AV out. But , its suited for image and video viewing. upto this its ok. but when coming to browsing, the web page is not resized to the TV resolution to fit to TV screen size.

i feel it should have a feature to identify the device resolution and switch to that resoluion on demand by the user, when he connected to TV while on browsing. with

this we can almot replace a computer.

2.when connected to TV via AV, the mobile screen is ON, it should have a feature to turn Off mobile display.

    3. in N73 we can resend any messages (bluetooth messages and images, 3gp files) from inbox via bluetooth or Ir. But N95 lags this feature.

    4. Camera tool bar is not colorful as N73.

    5. Ram size is low

i want teke these issues to Nokia Developers...some one pls help...

The best way to contact Nokia is via the "Contact Us" link in the top right of this page.

Not sure you'll get much joy from them with these issues, though: most sound like "features" as opposed to "bugs".

    How smart is SMART now?

    Thanks! Good info.

The SMARTEST thing to do is to make back-ups. We should always assume that hard drives will fail without a warning. *Smile

SMART provides a valuable warning of potential drive failure. But no warning can be relied on to protect you from data loss.

The time between receiving the warning and drive failure may be too short to recover your data.
SMART can only warn of certain types of drive failure. There are failures, such as in the drive electronics, where it will provide no warning at all. Many drive failures occur with no warning at all and for no apparent reason.

And warnings are of no use unless they are heeded. I have seen so many cases on forums that go something like this:

The hard drive starts to make strange noises, possibly with SMART warnings at bootup. Other errors develop. No action is taken. Finally:

"HELP!! My computer won't start. It contains very valuable files and I have no backups"

By then it is often too late.

The best protection against data loss is regular backups made when there are no warnings or symptoms. You do this because the drive may fail with no warning. Or one of many other things may happen. When a SMART warning occurs you take extra care. Be very sure your backs are in good order and maybe make another one, just in case. Be prepared to replace the drive in the near future.

  7. I used to think that SMART would give advanced warnings of drive failures, but this year, I've had two Seagate drives fail on me suddenly without any indications at all! In both cases, the drives were working fine one day and dead the next. I have to agree with one of the conclusions in the article in that SMART is useless for warning about impending drive failures.

SMART does provide valuable warnings of drive failure. It is just that you can't rely on them. Big difference.
Many warnings outside of computers are like this. The "Check engine" light in a car offers valuable warning that something is wrong and needs to be looked into. But the lack of a warning doesn't mean all is well.

You cannot rely on SMART to detect drive failure. That would require the ability to predict the future. For all the advances made in science that is beyond it's abilities.

I've NEVER had a warning by SMART, and have had a few HDDs fail. I agree with Mark Phelps. Even when the drives have been sqealing and groaning, nothing showed up in SMART.

SMART does provide valuable information but it's retroactive, only in cases when something already happened. Should be checked at some intervals, after something happens to disk it maybe late. Problem is interpreting results, most of SW shows cryptic data to untrained eyes. There are many programs for checking disks and SMART alike : Download Passmark DiskCheckup - MajorGeeks but best bet is to use some application provided by drive's manufacturer.
Health and Performance indicators in SMART monitoring are on the other hand speculative from the side of manufacturer, had many cases when Health was indicated as very poor but disk still worked flawlessly, that's because of some problems that happened in the past but was rectified, poor data and power cable connections at some time in the past or software induced bad sectors repaired since live mark in SMART and that mark can't be reversed even if repairs were successful.
I'm not sure about newer Windows but XP for instance would not install if SMART was enabled and was showing bad disk. Turning off SMART monitoring in BIOS would let you install XP but with bad drive it was iffy to say at least.

I have had trouble with the new 'green' drives failing, even brand new. Went on amazon and found a discussion as to which country they are assembled. So I ordered and returned, until I received the correct country and they are correct: testing software proved it. Some drives were half the speed of others: same name, from different country!

Well, there was that flood in Thailand few years ago. True that but those HDDs should be long gone by now. I've had only two WD Greens fail on me so far: the first was one of the early Greens that had the excessive head parking issue (that has long since been corrected) that never should have been installed as a sole drive by a computer shop that should have known better (one of the two the main reasons I broke down and learned how to build and maintain my own machines) and one that started showing SMART errors (over 300 reallocated sectors) before the factory warranty ran out and WD promptly replaced. Right now, I have ten Greens, four of which I bought recently and I am now "torture" testing (running multiple wipes for a about a week each drive). I use my Greens only for backups.

For my internal drives, I prefer WD Blacks. They are noticeably snappier and come with the longer warranty (five years) so are more likely to be more durable than the Greens.

I prefer to buy my Greens from NewEgg since I can buy an additional three years of "warranty" (technically, it's a service plan) for a reasonable price, giving me a full five years of warranty. Blacks I can get from Amazon or NewEgg, depending on who sells them for less but prefer Amazon because if a drive shows up DOA (considering how poorly carriers handle them, it's surprising DOAs aren't any more frequent than they already are), I don't have to pay for return shipping.

    Hi there

I'd switch to SSD's if I were you - they are getting to almost mainstream HDD price. It won't be too long before spinners are obsolete in domestic environments. Less power, less heat, less mnanufacturing materials etc. SSD's lifecycle is just as good as or even better than spinners now anyway.

I did see some stupid imbecilic person from "The Green Party" over here saying another reason you should avoid using standard HDD's is that they can cause "Cranial Magnetic Stimulation" in Humans. !!!!!

Well there's always some strange people around -- seriously though SSD's are so superior in performance it's worth it unless you are talking high storage volumes. Even the 1TB sizes are now beginning to reach mainstream level of affordability.

For decent warning of imminent HDD failures - forget SMART - simply use the Storage spaces feature - where you can aggregate a pool (i.e 2 or more) of volumes into a single storage space. The volumes can be of different sizes and you can specify a % of the space to be set aside for recovery and data integrity -- you shouldn't need more than 25% in an extreme case. Now if a volume starts to fail you can organise a recovery and REMOVE the failing volume from the pool. You can dynamically also ADD more volumes at any time. - Works MUCH MUCH better than RAID where the volumes need to be THE SAME SIZE and you are using 50% for mirroring.

    Cheers

Watch out for earlier SSD, had bad experience with OC a few years ago; worth reading hardware testing site reports, before purchase. Also nowhere near enough storage space, but love PC start, from off in 30 seconds, against 90, on a 3GB/s drive. That minute is irritating, especially on a laptop!

Amazon were still selling assembled in C HD's until recently. I managed to purchase assembled somewhere else ones, after several tries; they last for years...
