Windows 10: How to Access the Windows 10 Startup Folder?

After the launch of Windows 10, the startup folder from the start menu was moved so that it is out of the spotlight. However, you can still find it if you know how to look for it. The startup folder is important as it lists all the apps that run when your computer starts.

Startup vs Settings


If you're looking to stop certain apps from running when you start your computer, you should go to the startup apps screen in settings. You can toggle all apps that you want to switch on or off at startup.

Opening the Startup Folder


The startup folder can be found in two locations. One is for your personal account and the other is for all users that use the system. To begin, open the run menu by pressing Windows+R. You should type 'shell:startup' (without the quotes) in the search box. This is for personal users. For all users, type 'shell:common startup' (again without quotes) in the search box and press enter.

This will open the startup folder and you will see various program shortcuts and folders. You can either add program shortcuts to this folder to start a program at startup or remove a shortcut to stop a program starting when your computer starts. While the settings menu works, this method is more effective.

Now that you know where to look for the startup folder, you can control which programs run or don't run when you start your computer.

Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

Quick Access not searching Pictures folder

Summary, that last suggestion didn't work.

• I moved the pictures to another folder temporarily.

• Then I tried to remove the Pictures folder with option one at Add or Remove Folders from This PC in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials. Even after rebooting, the Pictures folder remained.
• So I tried using option two. Same thing: reboot >> Pictures folder still there.

• Since there were no troubleshooting steps for this scenario, just for the heck of it, I ran through the restore steps. Copied some pictures into the Pictures folder, ran a Quick Access search and initial problem remains: Searching all of QA doesn't find any files in Pictures folder, running search on just the Pictures folder does. I want to run a global search and find matching files in any/all of the Documents, Music, Videos, and Pictures folders.

That article dates from 2015 and I'm guessing is out of date. I hope it didn't create potential future problems in my registry.

Bottom line: I'm still looking for a fix.

 

Can't get GPU-Z to start with Windows 8.1 startup

I'm not sure how to do that. Could you list the steps for a noob?
