I can't really comment on your statement, but if activation of the upgrade requires a certain process to be performed, doing it a different way, such as .iso, may not set the system up as required.

But these types of situations are normally why I go for the retail version, which will come with a License Key but may not need it for repeat installs.

If you go to settings, accounts, manage my account, and then devices - if you have used a Microsoft Account and have installed on more than one device with your MSA linked to that device - you will be taken to https://account.microsoft.com/?ref=s...form=Windows10
A few of your device details will be accessed from Microsoft's database on installed Windows 10 devices. Presumably phones and Xbox etc., will get there as well in time. Perhaps there are details of Windows 8 activity with the same MSA that are not shown.

If you click on a device, it will take you to Sign in to your Microsoft account

showing you that you can remove and add devices, for instance if you delete an OS or transfer to another device.

Microsoft has this information whether the installation is linked to an MSA or not as well as IP and ISP data, location thru WiFi or GPs etc. It's all a bit scary.

By the way, one of these installations is activated, the other is not.

Mobile phones use GPS for location. Windows 10 phones & tablets will do too.

A GPS would require hardware to perform that task and I for one don't have that. *Wink So how would that work??

I believe I wrote "or", but you picked up my typo "GPs" and sensed my meaning "GPS" *Smile
AFAIK, WiFi is commonly used to obtain location information for home installations, with the installation using a router which usually broadcasts unique Mac address information and Google Maps has been down your street sniffing out this data. Unless you use your Android phone on your home Wifi, when Google has not only your GPS and Wifi Mac address (home address too), but your Mobile Number, too. Oh, and your name and probably credit card details too, and everyone elses Wifi that you might have had access to. Even More Scary.

It's all a bit of fun really, but there is an awful lot of Data we leak even without knowing it. When I first got Windows 8, and the location found me perfectly I was really impressed, until I realised I had given my Postcode at some point - which locates me to about 50 yards. In a previous time I was erroneously located where my ISP had its server - and thus my IP address location - about 35 miles away.

In the UK, domestic WiFi is almost mandatory, but my ISP locates my nearest box in the street anyway, since that's where fibre ends and the last few yards are in copper. I'm guessing your 88.38 Mbps is probably Fiber too, so your distribution cabinet probably locates your installation.

Here's a paragraph from the Geolocation API:

I've also heard that the area code on your telephone can be used as a rough location too, if you have any dial-up services or accounts that require a land-line number. And your cellphone triangulates your position to local phone service masts.
