How to automatically change power modes when plugged in and on battery?

I'm looking for something which is pretty simple, yet I've spent the last couple of days searching forums and settings with no success.

Here is what I want: When my laptop is plugged in, I want Windows to recognize that it is plugged in and automatically activate the Best Performance power mode. When I unplug my laptop, I want Windows to recognize that it is on battery power and automatically
    activate the Balanced power mode.

Please tell me that there is a way to do this.

So far, the best workaround I have found is to go into the advanced settings for a certain power mode where I can change things like desktop background slide show (paused/available), wireless adapter power saving mode (max power saving, medium, low, max
performance) etc. and manually change all of the settings to match what they would be for Best Performance and Balanced. This seems like a very tedious exercise and I'm not even sure I'll catch all of the various behind-the-scenes changes of the different
    power modes.

I know that I could easily change power modes manually when I plug in/unplug my laptop, but there are many things that we could easily do manually throughout the day but we take advantage of the option to automate. I've forgotten to change my settings to
Balanced on more than one occasion when getting to work without a charger and I've found myself running out of battery faster than I'd like.

I appreciate any help on the matter.

    Thanks!

  3. why my power mode changes into power efficiency mode automatically?

    Hello Mushirul Islam,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

Your laptop automatically switching to power efficiency mode when you plug it in for charging might be due to a few reasons:

    1. Power Management Settings: Your operating system might have default power management settings that automatically switch to power efficiency mode when plugged in. This is often done to prolong the lifespan of the battery and reduce energy consumption.
    2. Manufacturer's Software: Some laptops come with manufacturer-specific software that manages power settings. These programs can override your settings based on predefined criteria, like when the laptop is charging.
    3. Battery Health: If your laptop's battery health is deteriorating, the system might automatically switch to a mode that minimizes battery strain.
    4. System Updates: Sometimes, system updates can reset or alter your power settings without your knowledge.
To address this issue, you can:

    • Check Power Settings: Go to your power settings in the control panel or system settings. Ensure that 'Balanced' is selected for both battery and plugged-in modes.
    • Update or Configure Manufacturer's Software: If your laptop has manufacturer-specific power management software, make sure it's updated and configured according to your preferences.
    • Check for System Updates: Ensure that your operating system is up to date, as updates can sometimes fix bugs related to power management.
    • Battery Health Check: Consider checking your battery's health status. If the battery is old or deteriorating, it might be time for a replacement.

Thank you for your patience and understanding!

    Best wishes

  4. How to automatically change power modes when plugged in and on battery? 2024

Plugged in but battery does not charge

If the laptop works without the battery then charger is functioning correctly. Take a cloth with a bit of rubbing alcohol on it (or some on-the-go alcohol swabs), and clean the metal contacts that connect your battery to your laptop.

Make sure to install all Windows important updates.

Install latest versions of your laptop device drivers you can download the latest device drivers from the device manufacturer or from your laptop manufacturer website.

    Step 1

    1. Shutdown your laptop.

    2. Remove the battery.

    3. Connect the AC power adapter to your laptop.

    4. Power on the laptop

    5. Open the Device Manager by typing Devmgmt.msc into Start Menu or from Control Panel.

    6. Under the Batteries category, right-click all of the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery listings, and select Uninstall (it’s ok if you only have 1).

    7. Shutdown the laptop.

    8. Insert the battery.

    9. Power on the laptop.

If above suggestions wont resolve the battery charge issue then follow below steps.

    Step 2

    1. Shutdown the laptop.

    2. Remove the battery.

    3. Start the laptop with only AC adapter connected to laptop.

    4. When you login to Windows OS connect the battery while Windows OS working.

    Step 3

Reset the System Management Controller. Use one of these methods to reset the SMC, which controls battery management, battery status light.

    1. Shut down the computer and disconnect the power cord.

    2. Remove the battery.

    3. Press and hold the power button for ten seconds.

    4. Reattach the battery and AC power adapter, then start up the laptop.

Hopefully one of the above suggestions will help you resolve the battery not charging problem. If battery still doesn't charge, you may need to replace your battery.
