  2. How do I restore a program to open up to what it was before?

    Hello DakotaRThompson.

Thank you for your question. .cfg usually means configuration file, and you should be care with changing it.

I think this article will help you:

"Change default programs in Windows 10"

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/402816...

Thank you for your time. Have a nice day.

  3. How do I restore a program to open up to what it was before?

Hi Dakota. I'm Greg, a volunteer installation specialist and 8 year WIndows MVP here to help you.

The .cfg default is to nothing so it takes some working around to get it back to nothing from whatever you set it.

There are several methods for doing this that might work here and which basically function the same in Windows 10:

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

How to change a file's open with program to when i first downloaded it

Go to Default Programs in Control Panel open it, select Set your Default Programs. First off you need to know the extension of this file you do not want any program to open, example, jpeg, gif..etc.. Select each program that can open this file and uncheck that extension for it, then would be back to unknown.

  5. basically for the exact situation here, i downloaded a sky\rim mod and i accidentally put it so it would open the file with windows photo viewer from what i see the files extension is .dds but when i do as you say, i don't see a option that is check marked for a extension such as dds, is it possible for someone to help me via teamviewer? if not then does this recent information change the steps in anyway?

Skyrim is a PC game how did you make this file open with which is called Photos now in Windows 10, said you checked defaults for this viewer and do not see it ? Not familiar with this type of file, but believe should not be opened with Photos. I know nobody here that does team viewer for forum help.

Starting to understand reasons for this viewer with Skyrim, maybe need another viewer for it unless game came with it. Is this what you are trying to do anyway, view the .dds files ? Skyrim DDS Image Viewer
As far as eliminating Photo viewer from using it should be done in Default Programs as suggested, if associated with it, then would be on the list under that viewer, Photos.

How to change a file's open with program to when i first downloaded it

Well not on the list, so wonder how it opens it. If right click the .dds file and select properties by clicking the change button will tell you it is associated with it, but here can only change it to another program. Default Programs area in your last 2 pics is only place i know unless find it in the registry and edit it or uninstall the game and reinstall. For one Windows Photo Viewer is really no longer used in Windows 10, Photos is new one, either you restored it or came over from the existing operating system.

Sorry this is all i know. Did i have the reasons correct on why you have to open a .dds file to begin with or is it opening and you do not want it to, not much else is explained here.

I think this will work. Would be a good idea to make a backup of your registry first though.

Open a Elevated Command Prompt and enter the following:assoc .dds
    Response should be

    .dds=ddsfile
    Next enterftype ddsfile
    Response should be:
ftype ddsfile File type 'ddsfile' not found or no open command associated with it.
If instead it shows an associated actionthen you enter
    ftype ddsfile=
and that should reset it to Unknown.
