How to change file association in explorer "save as" screen?

How can I change this file association (in the registry)? In the save screen, under "save as type", you can seee that jpg files are being associated with the application ACDSee Pro 7. This program has been uninstalled from my system. It is not the default program for opening this file type, so why does it continue to appear in the save screen?

  2. Windows 10 Zip Files options grayed out

I tried changing the file type association using "open with" from windows explorer and choosing another program (like notepad) and then changing it back to "Explorer", but every time I did that, the file type association disappear again.

How to change file association in explorer "save as" screen?

Click Settings --> Default Apps --> Photos entry. Choose an app windows pops up, at which point you can select from among the items that appear, or get something different from the Store. In this case, I need to reset to my photo editor, PSPx9, so that's what I'll do next. In your case you'll see the ACDsee Pro x7 entry, and pick something else instead.

the new default was set some time ago, which is what has me confused. clicking on any jpg file automatically opens the new application, so it would seem that the default has been "set". i was wondering if there's a place in the registry where i should be looking.

A more reliable way is to do it thru File Explorer. R-click any .jpg/Open with/Choose another app (even if the one you want is on the list). Next window, select your desired program (scroll down to 'more apps' if preferred one is not there). Tick 'Always use ...' box, Close; you're good to go.

i just posted that pic to give you an idea that the change had been made. plus like i said, jpg files auto open with the default program (faststone). so faststone IS the default program, however the save menu remains unchanged.

here's a look at the setting in the registry. also there are no traces of the old application anywhere in the registry (that i can find):

I often have to restart before certain changes are set in stone.

Have you looked in the below registry locations as well as did you search the registry for any remnants of ACDSee

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Extensions

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\jpegfile

there is no entry for HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Extensions.
i have checked the following locations:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\FastStone.jpg
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\jpegfile
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.jpg
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.jpg

i also searched all keys, values and data for "acdsee". there were some leftover entries, but nothing of any consequence.

the problem was in firefox. i hadn't realized that this was only happening when attempting to save an image from within the browser. so...

i had tried to change the default settings in the download dialogue, but that didn't work. i found the solution here:
Applications panel - Set how Firefox handles different types of files | Firefox Help

here you can see the old entries inside the application settings within firefox:

the only way to fix this was to delete the mimeTypes.rdf file inside of the firefox profile folder. this removes the old "acdsee pro 7 jpeg" entries and adds a new entry which is simply called "jpeg image":

now the "save as" window shows these files as "jpeg image":
