How to completely turn off Aero Peek

I have done everything I can to turn off Aero Peek. I'm referring to the thumbnail previews you see when you mouse over an open item on your bottom taskbar. For example, if I have Word open but am looking at my desktop, if I mouse over the "Microsoft Word" icon in the taskbar (quick launch taskbar) at the bottom of the screen, I see a small thumbnail image of the document I'm editing.

    I hate that.

I just want to disable those little previews / thumbnails when my mouse moves into the lower taskbar and moves over one of the open programs.

I have disabled this in taskbar properties, but that isn't working.

I went into Regedit and set every item I could fine labeled "AeroPeek" to 0.

I'm still seeing those stupid thumbnails.

    Any suggestions?

    :)

Speed up your Booklet 3G the right way

I want my booklet to run faster as well. What is Aero or Aero Peek and Snap? Do I need it? Is there anything else I could turn off or uninstall (something I decide I don't need)?

Also- I swear the rep - actually 2 reps at local Best Buy said that the Booklet was expandable to 2G!!!

  3. Taskbar Aero-Peek doesn't work with more than one window

    Hi Alex,

Double check if Aero Peek is enabled:

    • Click Start Menu
    • In the search box, type in performance
    • Select Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows.
    • Under the Visual Effects Tab, make sure the following are checked:
    • Enable Aero Peek
    • Enable desktop composition
    • Use visual styles on windows and buttons
    5. Click OK.

If that didn't work, run the Aero Troubleshooter.

    • Click Start Menu
    • Type in troubleshooting
    • Press Enter
    • Select Display Aero desktop effects
    • Click Next.
Let the troubleshooter finish the process and it will restart the Aero Peek feature.

Let us know if you need further assistance.

How to completely turn off Aero Peek

Hello klgrube, and welcome to Ten Forums.

Those would be taskbar thumbnail previews instead. *Smile

None of those worked. The taskbar Tweaker utility won't run on Windows 10 and I couldn't locate the registry entries mentioned. My themes don't show "aero" themes. or any setting for aero.

    Any other suggestions?

    Try:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Mouse

and set MouseHoverTime value to something so high it effectively disables it. (400 is the default) 400000 should do it! *Wink

Sign out - sign in and you should be good to go.

Open notepad and copy this into it...
    ____________________________________________________________________

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
    "ExtendedUIHoverTime"=dword:000186a0

    ____________________________________________________________________

    Save the file as 'nomoretaskbarthumbs.reg'
    Then execute the file.
(Merge it in to your registry.)
    Reboot your computer.

Yes, that combination finally worked! Thank you so much! I do hope Microsoft will make this change easier to implement.

That may be true, but with the Windows 10 Technical Previews updates, it took some time to get to it working. Also, I DID make these changes a couple of times between updates, and they just weren't working. I finally seem to have a stable build that isn't preventing these change from staying. But the main thing is that I'm not longer seeing those previews, and that makes things much nicer. Thanks again.

I did this and didn't even have to reboot and it worked. I joined this site just to say THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH. I hated that POS aero crap like nobody's business (and naturally, Windows loves to force crap on you......). You are the man.
