    I typed:

    dism /Get-WimInfo /WimFile:install.esd

    Description : Windows 8.1 Pro

    Then extracted :

    dism /export-image /SourceImageFile:install.esd /SourceIndex:2 /DestinationImageFile:install.wim /Compress:max /CheckIntegrity

    .
    .
    in short;

    The operation completed successfully.


    I extracted one of the indexed items and want to put this back alone only
    so How to compress back this install.wim to install.esd, and most importantly what must be set to the installation configuration to be able to smoothly perform the installation correctly after the other(s) left out.

    Windows ESD Installation Files in Disk Cleanup

    Hi,

    Microsoft uses the ESD file format to deliver the installation files needed.
    ESD stands for Electronic Software Delivery.

    The Windows install.esd file contains the usual Windows
    install.wim     file (WIM = Windows Imaging), encrypted and compressed.
    Install.wim     file it contains everything needed for a complete Windows installation.

    May we know the exact build you are using?

    Why bother?

    You can simply create an ei.cfg text file wth edition you want and put in sources folder to automatically select right edition of the multi edition from media creation tool during installation. The size saving is minor as the standard esd has all feature and the index just installs each from that in a slightly different way.
