  1. How to control USB safe to dismount notifications

This topic keeps popping up and I want to share what I know from my two computers and testing.

As of Jan 29, 2019, Windows 10 Pro 1803 my testing provided this information. I wanted to show how to do this without using Registry edits or other IT Administrator methods. I do not know if this will work on Windows 10 Home.

Do we need the safe to dismount notification? Sometimes.

Today, pulling a USB drive from the port may not harm the data but if you use external hard drives it is still a huge risk to pull the drive out without dismounting it. In previous versions of Windows you could easily loose data because it was not written to the disk until the dismount process was run. Many USB devices now handle the plug pull without dismounting.

Two separate "Settings" panels must be managed to get USB notifications.

    In "Settings" "Focus assist":

"Get all notifications from your apps and contacts." MUST be selected as "Off"

ANY setting other than "Off" will block USB dismount notifications.

CAUTION, if you choose "Automatic rules" "During these times" the top level "Off" will be deselected in the time range selected. That may lead to chaotic behavior if you don't actually use or understand quiet hours. In previous versions of Windows "Focus assist" was known as "Quiet hours". You may observe that the USB safe to dismount message seems to work sometimes and then does not.

    In "Settings" "Notifications & actions":

    In the "Notifications" section:

The toggle for "Get notifications from apps and other senders" must be ON.

No other toggle in "Notifications" will block the USB dismount message; set them as you prefer.

In the "Get notifications from apps and other senders" section:

None of the toggles need to be selected for USN notifications; set to your preference.

    Happy Trails

    :)

How to control USB safe to dismount notifications

Disable "Power Surge on USB" message

    Hi David,

If the system detects that a USB port is going over the power limit, the system is set to notify the user by default. However, since you mentioned that you're still getting the notification after you disabled the alerts, we suggest following these steps
    instead:

    • Right-click the Start button.
    • Choose Device Manager.
    • Click the drop-down arrow beside Universal Serial Bus controllers.
    • Right-click anything that has USB Host Controller in its name, and select
      Properties.
    • Go to the Driver tab and select Uninstall.
    • Restart your computer. The driver will be reinstalled automatically.

Let us know if the error notification disappears after following these steps.
