Windows 10: How to default from docx back to Word

I allowed an update and restart and now all my Microsoft Office Word documents are word pad docx. It will let me “open with” Word, but how do I get them to default back to opening as Word documents. Thank you

Windows 10 WordPad .docx vs. Microsoft Word .docx ?

I do have LibreOffice installed and my WordPad options look just like yours. Are you saying LO somehow added their .docx option to the drop down menu list of WordPad?

 

File extension *.docx

I already did all the steps you suggested but MS Office 2013 ignored my change and defaulted to *.docx. Is there some other solution?

Hi Mark,

Updated WordPad versions cannot save files in .doc or .docx format anymore, unlike the previous versions. For us to convert the .txt file to .docx format, we suggest that you follow these steps:

• Right-click on the .txt file. Select Open with, and then click on
  Choose another app.
• How do you want to open this file? window will pop up. If you can't see the
  Word app from the list of options, click on More apps, and the select
  Word.

• The document will now open in Word app. Click on File tab.
• On the left pane, select Save As.
• On the right pane, select Word Document (*.docx) from the drop down box.

• Click on Save button.
