how to disable all automatic restart in windows 10?

Windows 10 Home rebooted for an unknown reason this morning.
I woke up and found my pc hanged and unresponsive.
I was able to connect through the vnc server, and saw the dot-circle going round and round. Just stuck there.

I had to hard reboot. When I checked the Event Viewer, I could not determine what triggered the restart.

Yesterday, I installed a new nvidia graphics driver, but did not reboot. It did not ask me to.

Windows update setting is set to "notify me to schedule restart"
I set that a long time ago. so it's not supposed to auto reboot.

What other ways does Windows auto reboot? I need to shut them off.

I need my pc to have 100% uptime, and only allow manual reboots. I hate when I wake up to surprises like this.

    :)

(how to disable automatic restart) rant about automatic updates and Windows 10 in general

I'll bet you all were having a big laugh while I was gone. Little did I know that "restart" meant shut down an hour and a half, while MS installs updates.

What the **** was MS thinking when they created this?

1 - It is inappropriate to force users to stop what they are doing, whenever MS has a whim and wants to....apparently re configure my system, in addition to install updates. I see several customizations I had made have been reverted. Hopefully I still
have the ability to reset them.

2 - It's inappropriate to force updates into the foreground, so that the user can't use their computer while the updates are in progress.

3 - It is inappropriate not to give users any control over when this happens.

    4 - It's inappropriate entirely.

And by the way, I called tech support while this was happening. They said I had better get used to this, because this is the future.

Well let me give MS a clue. This is not progress!

I had already decided to install some Linux system alongside Windows 10, and to gradually switch over to Linux full time. The next new computer I buy will only run Linux.

I made that decision when I heard that Windows 10 will be the last Windows operating system which is fully contained on the pc, and apparently Windows is going to be cloud based after this. But the move to Linux will need to be a gradual move for me, because
one needs a certain amount of experience to use Linux. I only hope I have enough. Anyway, I'll still need a Windows system to fall back on, while I'm learning.

When I called tech support during this entirely inappropriate hour and a half, while waiting for this "future" to happen, without being able to use the computer, I asked if it would be possible to revert to Windows 7.

Thank god they said yes! So later this week, I will say goodbye to Windows 10, and install Windows 7 on this new computer.

Oh yes, I'm still switching to Linux. But Windows 10 is so bad, I can't even use it as a backup while I learn Linux!

    What was MS thinking?!!!

And just for the record, it's not just this issue which prompts me to revert to Windows7. Here are all the other problems I've had. (Oh, and I see this update has forced All Apps to be permanently open on the Start menu, instead of reduced to an icon.
Aren't you clever. Force your wanna be apps in front of my face, as if that will make me use them.)

1 - no full featured mail program (where can I create message rules, so that email goes into the correct folder at the time it's downloaded?)

2 - unable to view certain images with the photo viewer (unable to view certain images in Windows 10 image viewer)

3 - unable to make scrollbars wider, and other customization for window appearance (personalize Win10 like Win7, XP?)

This all makes me wonder exactly what is better about Windows 10? As far as I can tell, I see some news program and weather report on the start menu - those are halfway useful....along with a bunch of "social media" BS which is worthless to me. But I don't
see anything I would consider an improvement.

I'll edit the title of this thread, to indicate there's a rant.

Thanks for listening how to disable all automatic restart in windows 10? :)

  4. how to disable all automatic restart in windows 10?

Run CMD as admin and copy/paste:

    reg add "HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU" /v "AlwaysAutoRebootAtScheduledTime" /t REG_DWORD /d "0" /f
    reg add "HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU" /v "NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers" /t REG_DWORD /d "1" /f

That setting works only for a limited time, eventually Windows will restart itself.

You are not going to stop Win10 Home from installing security updates. Microsoft feels they are so important that they have blocked all ways to stop them, believe me I have tried. I tried all the registry hacks and even programs like O&O ShutUp 10. Like TairikuOkami said, eventually they will come through.

If you have wifi, you can slow them down by setting your wifi connection to Metered. If you don't have wifi there is a registry hack to fool Windows into thinking you do. But even having the Metered connection turned on, they will come through eventually. The only way I found to stop them is to disable Windows Update in Services. Then when I have time, I enable it, and download the updates. I know it's not the safest solution but im okay with it.

This is the guide if you don't have wifi
