Windows 10: How to disable Microsoft’s ‘Meet Now’ feature in Windows 10

Meet Now in Windows 10 is a new feature that allows users to host and attend meetings remotely using Skype.

Meet Now taskbar icon was added to Windows 10 version 1903 or newer with mandatory December 2020 updates. Since the feature was formally announced, folks have had mixed feelings about Microsoft’s approach, with some users calling ‘Meet Now’ bloatware.

To hide the Meet Now taskbar icon, you can simply right-click on the new video icon on the taskbar and select ‘hide’, as shown in the screenshot below.



If you’re still unable to hide the icon, you’ll need to open taskbar settings or Group Policy Editor to permanently disable the Meet Now feature.

How to hide Meet Now icon in Windows 10


To hide the Meet Now icon on the taskbar, use these steps:

1. Right-click your taskbar and select “Taskbar Settings.”
2. In the Settings window, scroll down and tap on “Turn system icons on or off” link.
3. Locate the “Meet Now” icon in the list.
   
4. Select the option and toggle it to “Off” by clicking it.

How to remove Meet Now icon on taskbar


If the icon is still pinned to the taskbar or the system tray, you can also remove the icon with these steps:

1. Head to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar.
2. Click “Select which icons appear on the taskbar” under Notification area.
   
3. Select the Meet Now notification icon and it will disappear from your taskbar.

Disable Meet Now icon on taskbar using Group Policy Editor


Group Policy Editor gives you a set of rules to govern the way the Meet Now feature operates in the OS. To permanently disable Meet Now in Windows 10 for all user accounts, follow these steps:

1. Open Group Policy Editor.
2. Navigate to User Configuration > Administrative Templates.
3. Select “Start Menu and Taskbar”.
4. In the right pane, double click on “Remove the Meet Now icon” policy.
5. Select “Disabled”.
6. Click on OK and close the editor.

With the above configuration, you’re all set. The icon will disappear from the taskbar for all user accounts.

It’s also worth noting that the tech giant is slowly pushing the Meet Now feature to other products, such as Outlook and Microsoft Edge. With this forced update, Microsoft could help Skype sustain and protect its userbases from rivals like Zoom and Microsoft’s own Teams.

As we mentioned at the outset, Meet Now is integrated into Skype and it allows users to initiate meetings without subscribing to Microsoft or Skype account.

The process is also fairly simple as you only need to click on the icon and generate a unique link that you’ll need to share with participants.

If you want to re-enable the feature, you can go back to the same taskbar settings and toggle the option to ‘on’.

it would've been great if microsoft added HEVC decoders, LAV filters along with other codecs with Windows 10, and developing WMP to be better than VLC, KMPlayer and such sorts of media players.

Nevertheless, this is good step for microsoft, by far.

 

Windows 10 Tweaks

As you may already know, Windows 10 (as well as Windows 8) allow you to log in with a valid Microsoft account, instead of creating a local account that only works on your machine. However, you may prefer to keep a local account for privacy reasons. If you do, though, some Windows 10 features—like Cortana—may not work. Despite the default behavior, the Windows 10 Store is not one of them. You can still log in to your Microsoft account for just the Store without switching to a full Microsoft account. The process, however, is not terribly obvious. To do so, follow these steps:

• Launch the Store from your Start menu.
• Click the user icon next to the search box.
• Click “Sign-in” from the menu that appears.
• Choose “Microsoft account” and log in like normal.
• When the “Make it yours” box appears do not enter your password. Instead, click “Sign in to just this app instead.”

Microsoft testing blue light reduction feature for Windows 10

"Microsoft is slowly revealing new features in its next major update to Windows 10, and it appears blue light reduction feature might be a future addition. The software giant released a new build of Windows 10 testers yesterday with very few visible additions, but Windows enthusiasts have already started picking it apart for clues on new features. Twitter user "Core"has discovered references to a "BlueLightReduction" setting deep within the next major update to Windows 10 (codenamed Redstone 2). It appears to be a setting that will be toggled from the Action Center (notification center) in the operating system.

F.lux has been the most popular option for Windows users looking to reduce blue light in the evenings, but Microsoft's own native toggle will bring this feature to every Windows 10 user. Apple has also integrated a similar feature in iOS 9, but it hasn't announced any plans to bring blue light reduction to Mac OS yet. Microsoft only appears to be testing the feature right now, so there's no guarantee it will ship in the update due early next year. If Microsoft does implement it fully then it will presumably be available on the mobile version of Windows 10, too."
