How to disable the Use Recommended Browser Settings prompt in Microsoft Edge

This post will show you how you can disable the Use recommended browser settings prompt on your Edge browser. Microsoft has started prompting “Use Microsoft recommended browser settings” in the Edge Chromium that seems the company is now urging or pushing users to use Edge as the default browser and Bing as the default search engine.

The popup mainly appears when users open the updated Edge Chromium browser on Windows 10. The most irritating part of this problem is that it could keep displaying the alert every time you open the browser, notwithstanding you have already dismissed the recommendation.

    The options offered are:

    • Use Microsoft recommended browser settings
    • Don’t update your browser settings.

If you don’t want to see this annoying popup when you open the browsers, you can disable it manually using a hidden experimental flag. Let us learn how to disable the recommended browser Settings Prompt in Microsoft Edge.

Disable Use recommended browser settings message in Edge

If you want to disable the “Use recommended browser settings” prompts the Edge browser, follow the below suggestions:

    1. Open the Microsoft Edge browser first.
    2. Now go to the edge://flags page.
    3. Search flags for Show feature and workflow recommendations.
    4. Next to the right of the flag, click on the drop-down arrow and switch it to Enabled.
    5. Relaunch your browser to let the changes take effect.

Let’s now see the above steps in detail:

To get it started, open the Microsoft Edge browser first and make sure you have the latest browser version.

If you don’t know how to check it, then go to the top right corner in the Edge browser and click on the three dots. From the menu list, click Settings > About Microsoft Edge and you will see the Microsoft Edge automatically updates if the updates are available.

After updating the browser to the latest version, go to the address bar, type edge://flags, and press Enter.

Then go to the search box, type Show feature and workflow recommendations, and see the related flag in the Experiments section.

Alternatively, you can type the following text code in the Chrome address bar and hit Enter to open the flag directly.

    edge://flags/#edge-show-feature-recommendations

The web page with an option of Show feature and workflow recommendations will open on the window.

Click on the drop-down menu and change it from Default to the Enabled option.

Then click on the Restart button so that the changes will take effect the next time you open the browser.

    Hope it helps

Microsoft is developing a built-in ad blocker for its Edge browser

"One of the first browser add-ons many people install to improve their online experience is Adblock Plus or something similar. Until recently, Microsoft Edge's lack of support for add-ons put off a lot of would-be users, but reports from Build 2016 suggest that native ad blocking is on its way to the Internet Explorer successor.

Adblock Plus is coming to Edge, but built-in ad blocking would negate the need for such an add-on. A slide shown off and snapped at a Build presentation shows that the next version of Edge, in response to user feedback, will feature ad blocking capabilities. There's no word on delivery timescale, but the upcoming Windows 10 Anniversary Update would seem a likely candidate.

ZDNet's Ed Bott photographed the slide which shows Microsoft's development roadmap built around feedback from testers. Right at the top of the list is reference to plans to create a plugin and extension store for Edge, but it's entry number four that's more intriguing.

"Build ad blocking features into the browser" is listed as a Feature Request from users. But the good news is that it is not only listed as being "Deliverable 4682811", but as "Targeted for the next version".

This will no doubt come as good news for those who have fallen in love with Edge, but it's not something that will be welcomed by the likes of Adblock Plus. It does seem that, particularly in the mobile arena, there is a move to baking ad blocking into the browser so it makes sense that Microsoft is following the trend. But it is the fact that Edge straddles Windows 10 on the desktop and Windows 10 Mobile that makes this a particularly interesting move.

Keep an eye out for Insider builds in the coming weeks as the feature may be just around the corner.
