Windows 10: how to dual boot win 7 or 10

i was using easybcd setup in 7 but it has failed. select win10 leaves me with grub > prompt.*Sick

so i selected win10 by using pc bios. am in 10 now.
what can i use with win 10?

stuff like this is worthless as it assumes both os are on same drive. mine are on seperate drives.

I have Dual Booting Windows 7 Ultimate & Windows 8.1 Pro, Is upgrading my windows 8.1 Pro to Windows 10 will erase Windows 7 ?

I had win 7 and win 10 dual boot, running just fine for several months.

THEN last nite somehow win 7 decided to updgrade to win 10 , even though win 7 was running.

Result was win 7 upgraded to win 10. Now dual boot has win 10 on one partition and win 10 upgrade on other portion. The upgraded win 7 (win 10) is all fouled and does not function. The original dual boot win 10 works ok.

The Microsoft upgrade somehow assassinated my smoothly running system, and I am jumping thru hoops trying to get my win 7/10 dual boot restored from a March 2016 disk image (that I thoughtfully had created while everything was working smoothly). This restore
is currently in progress, and I pray will be successful .. Will find out in a few hours. BUT .. I might jump off a bridge if win 10 again updates somehow to again assassinate my system. It is inexplicable to me that win 10 installs over win 7 when I have
not agreed/selected/opted to upgrade to win 10 while running the dual booted win 7. I don't know how it happened, and I don't know how to prevent it from recurring. Any suggestions?

Have Win 10 on SSD C:\ and a failing HDD with Win 7 and some programs I don't want to lose. I have a new HDD to use to create a dual boot. Media for Win 7 is no longer available. How do I clone the failing disk into a bootable partition on the new HDD?

ok, will look. I booted back into 7. I reran easybcd, and now get another weird security error from win10 refusing to allow a bootup.

Win 10 was booting ok before I ran easybcd again, and I have not checked if win10 can Boot, after I reran easybcd!
I dont think it should be this hard.

Following MS instruction on that displayed page by hitting enter just forces the PC to reboot the bios screen and start over.

I can still get into win7.

Any dual booting would need to go through win-10's options.

MAYBE you should look, it is a gen info page basically telling you it just works after you install win10 with nothing needed to be done by you!


I am not going to reinstall win10 from scratch just to find out it does or does not work like that. Must be a better way.

 

I simply have 3 discs in the PC, one with 7, one with 10, one with data.
In the past I simply hit esc key while booting and the bios gives me its own boot menu to choose various drives.
While it has been working for me, it is too geeky for non tech people to use easily.

Just checked, I can still hit esc key and boot the drive with win10, but easybcd is crudware. And oddly it used to work a week ago. Now nothing but various errors. I reran easybcd and deleted the win10 boot entry then I setup win10 again. but no good.

Well 10 shuts down differently than 7 not too different than win-8
Have you disabled fast start and or hibernation in win-10 ?
Inside 10 use cmd and

Are you saying win10 is now leaving something behind it did not do a week ago which is interfering with being selected to boot in the windows boot manager setup by easybcd?? ASFAIK, easybcd is modifying bcdedit boot file.

That is like really weird. I take it you dont ever run different os then. I have dual booted various windows and linux versions for years with accessing other drives and no problems whatsoever.

Thought I was fairly clear
10 likes to hibernate and not shutdown 1709 build even goes a little further then other previous builds did.

 

All right I did the command to turn off -h thing.
It still fails to boot from the windows boot manager built into windows 7.

See this picture, when select win10pro I get the windows 10 error I previously showed. This all used to work fine last week or so when I first set up easybcd, so MS must have updated something to make it fail, IMO. I did nothing. They are in total control of changes.

So do I now run 'powercfg -h on' ??????????

It is a philosophical thing, MS wants you to only use win10, not anything else, so dual booting is not made easy to do, low priority item, deliberately I think, oh a few freebies throw them a bone type things is all you will get from them for legacy os or linus dual booting. I figure it will work if I install linux with grub. Linux is deliberately designed for muti os booting, it has to be made easy for people to actually use linux at all, or they would stay with windows and never get to experience linux, so a survival thing with linux to make dual booting actually work.


i can just keepusing the bios esc key to select the drive. But none else will know their is an option to boot either 7 or 10.

I've gotten that message
For me it was secure boot is activated in bios also fast start
I had use F5 Optimize defaults and forgot to disable those 2 options.
