Windows 10: How to easily disconnect ethernet connection?

When the scourge of ransomeware attacks first appeared, the advice on the safest way to avoid them was to disconnect the computer from the internet when it wasn’t being used. My wife and I have followed this advice scrupulously ever since. It’s easy to disconnect a wifi connection by clicking on the wifi icon in the System Tray and clicking on Disconnect, but the procedure for disconnecting an Ethernet connection appears to be much more complex:- Go to Network & Internet Settings then Ethernet then Change Adapter Options then Ethernet then Ethernet Status then Disable. There's a possibility that your Ethernet connection is not enabled to wake on magic packet. For us to isolate this, let's look into the advanced settings of your network adapter. Follow these steps:

1. Navigate to Device Manager > Network adapters.
2. Right-click on your Ethernet connection and click Properties.
3. Click the Advanced tab.
4. Under Property, scroll down and select Wake on magic packet.
5. Set the value to Enabled.
6. Click OK.

Once done, try to observe if Ethernet connection still disconnects if put to sleep mode.

How do I most easily disable my ethernet connection in Windows 10? There seems to be no disconnect option as there is with wireless connections.

Ideally this Connectivity (IPv4/IPv6): Disconnected, means that the devices in not in use or not connected and it could be any device for example, Ethernet, WIFI, Bluetooth or Local Area Connection.



If you are using WI-FI for internet connection then Ethernet will show Connectivity (IPv4/IPv6): Disconnected.



In order to understand the issue and assist you accordingly, we need some information

• What is your network setup?
  
• Are you seeing any errors?
  
• Where you are seeing this information?
